August Netflix: What I watched

August has been a long month hasn't it? I feel like it dragged in for some reason so I am glad it's coming to an end and then we enter September, My birthday month! YAY! Since we are coming to the end of August I wanted to look back at some things I have watched this month. Spoiler, there are a few that are a complete waste of time!

Safe s1

When this was all the rage I made a point of not watching it, I have no answer as to why but I steered clear. After searching for something to watch when I was feeling quite sick I decided I would bite the bullet and give this a watch, boy am I glad I did! I can't believe I was avoiding this for so long because I became invested after the first episode. There are so many twists and turns I didn't see coming and I genuinely enjoyed the progression of the story line. The suspense throughout was very enjoyable, the characters felt fully formed and the casting was done really well, just as I thought I knew what was going on, another twist was thrown into the mix. I don't want to spoiler Safe for those who haven't seen it yet so I'll keep this brief as I feel I can't communicate exactly how I felt without spoilers, but I would seriously recommend this for anyone who likes mystery and intrigue. You'll be hooked from the start and it's an easy binge as it's 1 season. The acting was superb from start to finish, the plot had meat on it which I liked and seems to be rare these days, it reminded me a little of broadchurch only with a little more suspense and it felt more like a thriller to me.

Synopsis: After his daughter goes missing, a widower begins uncovering the dark secrets of the people closest to him.

Look away

I just want to start out by saying although I would recommend this, it's only because I'm glad I've seen it but it won't be one I watch again, it's a title I've added to my watch list and that's enough. It was an ok watch, I did get gripped at one point but the ending left me feeling a little unsatisfied and confused, although I enjoyed the idea of this story, it was a let down in a few ways. The character development felt a little forced, I understood where they were coming from but it could have been done a lot better if they took the time which I personally felt they didn't, some parts felt rushed and almost unfinished at times. I feel very conflicted with this title because in a way I enjoyed it but there was just something missing for me, I can't quite put my finger on it but it didn't live up to the reviews I read to be honest and maybe that's the problem, maybe I just had too high an expectation for the film.

Synopsis: A lonely 18-year-old high schooler opens up to her reflection because of the lack of support she has from family and her peers. She switches place with her supportive, but evil, twin that she discovers in the mirror's reflection, but the new found freedom unleashes suppressed feelings.

The basement

I was so excited to sit down and watch this movie because it looked like my kind of thing, I love horrors and thrillers, bonus points if there is gore involved as I love to try and figure out how they done it, I personally prefer old school props instead of CGI and I was intrigued by the synopsis so I thought I would give it a go. Unfortunately I was left utterly disappointed by The basement, I would describe this as a complete waste of time. I feel like this film had a lot of potential but it was wasted on a weak story line which followed Craig (Main character) being abducted by Billy (Antagonist) and kept in his basement. Billy is a serial killer which is plain to see from the outset. The acting was questionable at best and the only reason I've given this one star was because I didn't expect the ending, although I'm not even sure it deserves the start just based on that. If you want to waste your time, need something as background noise or just want to add this title to your watched list then go a head but it's honestly not worth it in my opinion. It didn't develop very far, no character substance, it felt predictable and over all, it was a drab experience.

Synopsis: A seemingly innocent man is abducted by a notorious L.A. serial killer, who forces his victims to role-play with him so that he can enact his capture, torture and murder fantasies.

Girls trip

Although I saw Girls trip in the cinema with my bestie Lisa, when I saw it was on Netflix I was overjoyed because my gran hadn't seen it yet and that meant a girls night for us, curled up on the sofa with munchies. I'm really glad we watched this film because I had forgotten parts of it and laughed just as much, if not more this time around. Girls trip is the perfect girls night in movie, filled with laugh, tears and feel good moments! The casting couldn't have been any better, Tiffany Haddish was amazing in it, she brought the comedy and played her character perfectly, for me she made the movie what it was. Although they all gave a great performance, Tiffany was my ultimate favourite, I had no idea how funny she was and I'm now a life long fan. I've seen lots of "bad" reviews for this movie but to me it was really good, one I could watch over and over despite some of the mistakes that were made in scenes (Studying film is both a blessing and a curse, I can spot movie mistakes very clearly now haha) I managed to overlook the mistakes thankfully and it didn't ruin anything for me and at the end of the day, if a movie can provide that feel good feeling and make me laugh, I'm satisfied.

Synopsis: When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there's enough dancing, drinking, brawling, and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

Orphan Black, s1, s2, s3, s4 & s5

Orphan black is by far my favourite out of the whole bunch on this watch list, I didn't buy into the craze when it came out as I always shrugged it off as one of those TV shows, you know the one where everyone is obsessed because it's the new thing but it's actually quite crap to put it politely but how wrong was I! I was hooked after the 3rd episode, I was a little sceptical at first but once I was drawn into the story line I couldn't help but be fixated on this show. I don't want to ruin this for anyone so I wont go into too much detail, but it was brilliant! If you've not seen it yet then I suggest you clear your schedule, get your comfies on, get the munchies ready and settle down to binge on orphan black. I had my emotions toyed with on many different occasions, I fell in love with multiple characters and thoroughly enjoyed every part of this. So many twists blew my mind, I was kept on the edge of my seat dying to know what was round the corner and the show kept just enough hidden to keep me gripped each time. If you enjoy mystery, strong female leads and enjoyable shows, this is the one for you. I won't lie to you though, sometimes it can feel tedious in a couple of the episodes, maybe that's just me though because I wanted to know what was going on and answers faster than what the show was giving me but the fact it kept me interested more than made up for those slow parts and thankfully, I only felt this for about 3 episodes tops and they weren't consecutive, it was about one each season from s3 onwards.

Synopsis: A streetwise hustler is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her.
