Celebrating The Woman Who Is My Rock

It's the 16th of September and that means it's my grans birthday! Yay! She's another year older and another year wiser, every day she surprises me and teaches me everything I need to know in life, she's my best friend, my rock.

I've spent 27 years with this woman by my side, she has been there for me when I really needed it, she helped me survive my mother’s death, she coached me through pregnancy, held my hand when times got tough and made sure I was always giving my best as I navigate adult life. There are truly no words that can describe my gran, she is everything to me and I honestly have no idea what's going to happen with me when she goes... I'll be lost, she’s the only one I have left and without her, life will feel empty.

Growing up I took my gran for granted, I kind of expected her to always be there for me, especially when I was going through a rough time and as the years have gone on I've come to realise that I need to cherish the time I have with her. I need to savour those sweet moments, make the most out of the time we have together because when she's gone, that's it. I never want to look back on our memories together and wish I made more of an effort or wish that we spent our time wisely because we were so swept up in life that we couldn't make time for each other. I cherish the friendship we have, more than anything because the bond we have is so strong. We fight, we argue, and we can't stand the sight of each other at times, we may say things we don't mean or do things we regret but when all is said and done, she's my family, my only true family.

I have so many amazing memories with my gran, when we jumped into a pool fully clothed on our last night of holiday, running down the streets in Spain as she played race cars with me, all those nights she held me as I cried, the quality days out, the laughs we shared. I remember running around her first ever caravan patting all the gnomes heads in her front garden, I remember all those times she bribed me with broccoli to do my chores when I was younger as I was obsessed with the stuff, I remember the trips to the beach, the late nights playing cards on holiday, I will always remember these things and that's what I hold dear.

There's so much I could write about my gran because she is my actual hero *I've actually written a post all about her, you can check that out here* She inspires me to be a better person, she’s taught me so many valuable lessons, she's nurses me back to health, held my hand when I had nowhere to turn, watched me go through hell to come out the other end and she’s never done it for a thanks, that's just the type of person she is, she would help anyone. She's also been through so much in her life, things that could ruin someone, but she has been one bad ass woman, kicking everything in her path down. She’s survived depression, kicked cancers ass twice, raised two beautiful babies who were unfortunately taken from her way too soon, she watched her children die and had to deal with the after math, she lost her dad, the one man in our lives who could put all other men to shame, he was the greatest man I knew. She’s watched me go through addictions, she’s been beaten within an inch of her life and had her face reconstructed, she’s been on the verge of death and laughed in its face. She survived two toxic marriages, the worst luck anyone could imagine and she’s still standing, smiling, singing every day without fail.

My gran is my hero and I just wanted to dedicate this day to her, she is a warrior and I hope she knows how incredibly beautiful she is, I'm blessed beyond words having someone like her in my life. So happy birthday gran, I hope you have the best day.

  1. Massive happy birthday to your Nan! She sounds like the kind of person we all need in our lives (I know I do) and you are very lucky to have such a wonderful and caring family member. She deserves the world and I think its really lovely that you’ve dedicated a post to her. I hope she had an amazing birthday!
