10 Ways to Switch off and Practice Self-Care │ Whilst Supporting BLM

The world can feel like a scary place at the best of times, and right now the world seems to be scarier than ever. We have been facing a world-wide pandemic for months now, the days are merging into weeks which turn into months and I'm still getting mixed up with what day it is. But when life gets a bit too much, it's important to take some time out for yourself to rest and recharge. 

I know that it can be hard to stop and switch off for a bit, especially when you feel plugged into life constantly. I've been researching and educating myself on Black history so I can be an informed ally, I've been watching the news 24/7 it feels like and I feel like I'm constantly taking in information. This is important to do, it is important to research, educate and fight. I have a post filled with resources and informative information on how you can do your absolute best - I understand that I will never understand, But I stand

But, even with educating ourselves and fighting, we need to take care of ourselves. It's important for your physical and mental health. Just because you have stepped away for a bit to get yourself in a better place doesn't mean that you aren't being active. Keep your mind healthy and you can perform better, as the saying goes, you can't pour from an empty cup. 

So, I've put together a post with 10 ways in which you can unwind, relax, take care of yourself but still actively be supporting the black community. 

Ditch Social Media 

Ditch social media for a bit, take your mind away from this space in order to switch off and listen to your body. Try and have a 24 hour period where you don't log onto any social media apps, use your time to do something like bake, knit, listen to music etc... 

Before taking your social media break, why not download/print some recipes to try out from Black chiefs / cooks / food bloggers.

Pick up a book 

Reading a book can be really helpful when it comes to switching off from the online world as it helps you escape, you can travel to new lands, battle with pirates, see the dinosaurs, have tea with the white rabbit and so much more. It can also be a great excuse to sit down with a book that can be thought provoking. What ever your genre of preferred reading, I have some opinions that may just be useful:

Meditation is a good way to de-stress and switch off, I find that meditation really does help me to centre myself, I feel refreshed afterwards and can perform better.

Go for a walk 

Going for a walk to get away from social media is very healing to me, it's a time where I can switch off and be at one with nature and my surroundings. Getting atleast 30 minutes of fresh air a day can make a world of difference, and when you're on the walk you could take the time to plug your headphones in to listen to music, an audible book, podcast, radio show, what ever you're in the mood for. 

A way in which you can support the Black community whilst you walk is by choosing playlists on music platforms that are solely for Black artists. Stream their music, listen, find new artists that you may not have been exposed to. 

Listen to a podcast 

Wither you're on a walk or simply in the house relaxing, cleaning, working, a podcast is always a great option to help you focus on something other than your phone or social media. I love putting on a podcast whilst I'm cleaning, I get to do my thing whilst also consuming content.

Clean your space 

I love cleaning my space, when I have a clean workspace I have a clear mind. I find that cleaning gives me a sense of accomplishment and relief, I get to sit back when it's done and be happy in the fact I have a clean space, plus right now it is always on my mind. 

Whilst I've been cleaning I've listened to some of the podcasts that are listed above, but I have also been listening to audio books, the one I am listening to at the moment on audible is Black Girl Magic - by Mahogany L. Browne, Idrissa Simmonds, and Jamila Woods

Have a bubble bath 

Having a bubble bath helps me to switch off and melt away for a while. It's my favourite self care activity because I can be alone, I can have a space that's just mine for a bit as I get rid of the stress from the day. 

Light some candles, set the mood, put on a playlist or listen to an audio book whilst you soak away in the tub, letting the stress just melt away.

Watch a good movie 

When life seems to be a bit too much and I don't have the patience or want to read, I put on my TV and I binge watch documentaries, shows and films. What ever moon I'm in will determine the genre of Show, Movie etc... that I go for, and I understand that's how a lot of people feel, so, here are some recommendations.

Do yoga 

Doing Yoga was never really something I thought about when it came to self-care, but over the last year I have really taken to it. I try to practice Yoga twice a week and like to incorporate it into my self-care routine, so I will normally do Yoga at night before bed or before a bath. There are loads of Yoga videos on YouTube which is where I go to consume this sort of content, so, here are a couple of suggestions on Yoga routines that are from Black creators.  

Have a dance session 

Having a dance session when I am cleaning or playing around with little bear is a great way for me to let loose and enjoy the moment, I'm sure we could all do with having some fun right now with everything that is going on in the world. So, why not put on some music and dance like no one is watching.
