5 Ways to Practice Self-Care this Christmas Season

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. This holiday is the perfect way to catch up with loved ones, reminiscence on the good ole’ days, and to celebrate one another.

However, there are times we may find ourselves quickly overwhelmed, tired, annoyed, and stressed because of the Christmas season.

I’m so excited to collaborate with Jordanne from thelifeofaglasgowgirl to discuss the importance of self-care during the Christmas Season.

I love Christmas just as much as the next. However, it’s hard to find time for self-care. We’re so worried about Christmas shopping, decorating, and celebrating that we don’t even think about how this might affect us at the end of the day.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t find myself physically and emotionally exhausted from Christmas shopping this year, mainly because of the pandemic.

With that in mind, here are ten ways you can practice self-care at Christmas and throughout the holiday seasons to ensure that you’re taking time off to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Stick to Your Morning Routine

Having a good morning routine sets the tone for the day. One of the first things I do each morning is to take a deep breath and set the tone for how I want to spend my day.

Each new morning allows you to prioritise your schedule, increase productivity, and focus on what is in front of you. Most people find that if they can stick to their morning ritual, the entire day will be better.

It’s so hard to stay on top of your routine when Christmas is around the corner. One way to solve this problem is to get yourself in the right mindset.

When my mind is right, I can accomplish anything I want and must do before I go to bed that night.

If I don’t take the time to plan out my day, or if I have to skip my self-care and morning routines, I am often grumpy and unproductive the entire day.

Choose the morning routine that works best for you. It’s okay to adjust it from time to time if it becomes too much for you. But remember to try your best to take control of the day before it controls you.

Treat Yourself

You should always put yourself first before anything, even at Christmas. People often place themselves on the back burner throughout the holiday season because they’re so worried about everyone else.

But that’s just not right. There are a million ways you can treat yourself this holiday season, which includes:

  • Getting your hair done
  • Getting a Manicure and Pedicure
  • Getting a deep tissue massage
  • Taking the day off

When it comes to self-care during Christmas, you must make sure that you’re taking time off to take care of yourself.

This is important because you cannot get into the Christmas spirit if you mentally exhausted, drained, and overwhelmed all the time, can you? No, so make sure you pamper yourself from time to time, so that doesn’t happen.

Take Breaks When Needed

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for shoppers and businesses. We often struggle with multitasking our gift shopping duties with maintaining the Christmas spirit in the family. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the busyness that comes with this season, it sometimes helps take a break and remove yourself from the situation.

Taking breaks reduces stress, anxiety and helps to maintain productivity throughout the day. Finding the time and space to take breaks is important because it allows you to refocus on what matters. Reconnecting with yourself is a great way to take back control of what Christmas means to you and a great way to practice self-care.

Go Outside & Exercise

Getting fresh air and sunlight is always an excellent way to boost your mood and energy levels.

Exercising is one of the best self-care practices because it affects your overall wellness: mentally, emotionally, and physically.

While many of us are stuck quarantined at home, it’s important to stretch your legs and walk around to avoid going insane.

You don’t have to do anything crazy.

Take 30 minutes out of your day to walk around in the neighbourhood and take in the fresh cold air smacking your face. By the time you get home, you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

Focus on Being Gratitude

Christmas is about sharing joy with others and being grateful for everything around you. Yet, many people only care about shopping and gifting materialistic items, which results in stress and panic.

By taking the time to show gratitude is good for the soul and heart.

Showing gratitude creates positive relationships, improved mental health, and feels good to do. The best part about showing gratitude is that it doesn’t require a dime.

Just going up to someone and hugging them is more than enough. Gratitude is one of my favourite ones of self-care because it makes me happier to see how old my gratitude has positively affected someone’s day.

Conclusion

Practicing self-care is extremely important this year because of everything we’ve been going through. With the pandemic still raging, many people had to find new ways to give gifts and connect with loved ones. Christmas should be the most wonderful time of year.

So, don’t get caught up in the craziness and busyness of it. All you need this holiday season is to have fun and prioritise your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

If you include some self-care into your daily schedule, you’ll be happier and even more filled with the Christmas Spirit.
