From looking for the latest products that will help keep our locks looking shiny and smooth to finding ways to get healthier hair.
We search for it all.
Well, today I’m sharing my top hair care tips that helped me grow my hair down to my tail bone.
Let’s dive in, shall we?
My personal journey to healthier hair
For years I tried everything I could to get my hair into a healthy condition.
You see, since I was 12 I’ve been dying my hair. And quite brutally might I add.
From bleaching to tight hair styles, I did everything that went against my overall goal of long, healthy hair.
It wasn’t until 2015 I took my hair care seriously because I was sick of split ends, breakage and it looked lifeless.
So, I got serious about hair care and soaked up as much information as possible to help me on my journey as well as studying Hairdressing at college.
Now here I am, so many years later and I have the hair of my dreams! Long, healthy and shiny, the trifecta.
It took a lot of trial and error, but I finally have a routine that helps keep my locks super shiny and looking the best it can.
Here are 6 Easy Ways To Get Healthier Hair and Minimise Breakage
These tips are easy, low maintenance and perfect for keeping your hair in the best condition possible.
Try starting out with one or two and then building on your routine to keep it manageable.
This will help to work these practices into your everyday life without feeling like you are bombarding yourself which will make them harder to stick to.
With that said, let’s take a look at these top tips for healthier hair.
1: Don’t wrap it up in a towel
When your hair is wet, it’s at its weakest.
This makes it more prone to breakage and split ends so you need to take extra care if you want healthier hair.
When you wrap your hair up in a towel, it makes it more susceptible to those nasty split ends we all hate and snapping.
Don’t rub your hair to get the water out either, that will definitely do you no favour and actually increases frizz!
A good alternative to using an everyday towel would be to use a microfiber one.
This is because it’s made of finer fibres and absorbs the right amount of moisture without leaving your hair open to nasty breakage.
But, I would suggest using no towel if at all possible.
Instead, simply scrunch your hair with an old cotton t-shirt.
This is much kinder for your hair and takes the initial dripping water away allowing you to air dry your h.air easier.
2: Use silk or satin pillow covers
I can’t recommend using silk or satin pillowcases enough!
As these pillow covers are smoother than other fabrics, it will allow your hair to move over it a lot easier than it would with other fabrics.
When we sleep we aren’t aware of our movements or just how much we move our head around.
You would be surprised at just how much breakage can happen to your hair when sleeping.
So, using a silk pillowcase helps to minimise that breakage and also minimises frizz.
As silk is a friction free fabric it’s a lot kinder for our locks plus it doesn’t suck out any moisture.
Yep, that’s right, using other fabrics such as cotton pillow cases can actually dehydrate your hair.
Be kind to your hair and opt to lay your head down on a smooth surface.
Plus, using silk pillowcases is also great for your skin as well.
3: Always use heat protection spray
A product that is absolutely essential in your hair care routine is heat protection spray.
For me it’s non negotiable now and I couldn’t live without it.
By now I’m sure we all know that heat isn’t exactly the best thing for your hair.
But, we use it.
From using a hair dryer to straighteners, it’s become a big part of many people’s hair routines.
So, as heat probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, use a heat protection spray.
By using a spray or cream, whatever you find works best for you, helps to create a barrier.
Although it won’t completely prevent any damage, it helps to reduce it significantly.
It works by creating a barrier for your hair and locking in moisture and reducing frizz in your hair.
The heat protectant also works to smooth the cuticle of the hair to create a shiny, smooth look throughout the strands of your locks.

4: Use hair oil
Ok, I know this one may feel a little off to some people.
I know it did to me when I first began my journey to healthier hair.
A lot of people assume that by using oil in our hair that it will make it look greasy and not so fresh.
But, trust me, it has amazing benefits.
Hair oil has been used for a long time in many cultures and it’s no surprise why as there are a lot of benefits such as:
- Shiny hair
- Hydration
- Improves hair growth
- Can prevent dandruff
- Help prevents hair loss
- And more
When it comes to using the oil, it’s best to use it the night before you are going to wash your hair.
Massage it into your scalp for about 5 to 10 minutes to help stimulate your hair follicles.
If you don’t want to leave the oil in your hair overnight though, it’s recommended to put it in about an hour or two before you wash your hair.
I personally like to put oil in my hair on a Saturday night as part of my Self-Care routine before I wash it on a Sunday.
What oil should you use?
The type of oil you use on your hair will depend entirely on your hair type and needs.
But some that I recommend checking out are Argan oil, Rosemary oil, and Sesame oil.
5: Brush from the ends up
When it comes to brushing techniques, the one that I highly recommend is starting from the ends and working your way up.
By starting at the root and continuing down, you can create knots and tangles which will lead to breakage.
It’s best to start from the ends and take it in small sections at a time.
This is a great technique for coloured/bleached hair or thick hair that is prone to tangles.
6: Invest in a hair brush designed for wet hair
As your hair is at its weakest when wet, I highly recommend investing in a wet brush.
Hair brushes that are designed for wet hair are a handy tool to make sure you are caring for your locks when in its weakest state.
These types of hair brushes are designed to reduce pulling, ripping and tension on the hair.
They are also really good to use if you have a sensitive scalp as they help to reduce the tugging at the roots.
With so many on the market now, it’s super easy to find one that suits your needs.
Your hair will definitely thank you and there won’t be as much breakage, allowing you to have healthier hair!

These are some great ideas to keep hair nice and healthy. I don’t have issues with breakage as I have never dyed my hair nor do I tend to put it in hairstyles (I tend to just let it run wild, haha); but I do have dry hair that needs some nourishment. I recently found a shampoo and conditioner that really helped me but I feel I need something extra like the hair oil you mentioned. Great post!
Thank you <3 I could honestly talk about hair all day haha I'm at a stage right now that I'm also leaving my hair to run wild, having a new born rarely allows me to do anything with it which is giving it some much needed rest from heat and restrictive hair styles. I highly recommend some hair oil for dry hair and some deep conditioning treatments, they work so well!
These are such great tips and techniques I will have to try this out my hair is so damaged it needs all the help it can get! Thanks for posting.
