6 Top Tips for Creating an Office Space at Home

AD | 6 Top Tips for Creating an Office Space at Home
Creating a home office is super popular at the moment, and I get it, a lot of us are working from home now and need that dedicated space.
Having somewhere you can go to get work done is heaven. It certainly beats having to sit with a laptop on your couch or at a dining table while you try to be productive.
So, I thought I would share some tips on how to create a motivational and calm office space in your home.
Here are 6 top tips for creating an office space at home

Choosing the space
In an ideal world you would have a spare room in the house that you can turn into an office space, but that isn’t always the case.
If you do have a room available, great! But you can also find a corner of your home to renovate into an office space. As long as it fits a desk and chair, you’re good.
When choosing your space go with an area that isn’t in the heart of the home. You know, the busiest part as that can lead to distractions during work hours.
Opt for an area that’s quiet and doesn’t have a lot of foot traffic throughout the day.
Create a plan
Making sure that you have a plan of action before you start is such a time saver. This will allow you to effectively manage your time and properly map out what you’ll need.
I find lists are super helpful when tackling any type of project, especially a home one. So, get a list together of items and material you’re going to need for your new office space.
It might be worth adding a budget plan to your project as well. This is to make sure that you won’t be going overboard and can stick within your means. Spending way too much money is easy to do, especially if you’re like me and you find yourself falling for those higher priced items.
Maybe make a floor plan as well. It will help you visualise what you’re going to be doing and where you’ll be placing everything.
Be prepared
If you are going to be renovating an area in your home but are worried about space for housing furniture and items while you work, consider using self storage.
Using self storage companies like Currie Easy self storage make it easier than ever to renovate areas in your home without worrying about space. This allows you to have a safe space to store items and furniture while you work. Meaning it takes the stress out of having barely any space to move around your house.
It’s also a good idea to get some dust cover sheets. These are handy if you are going to be painting. Sheets like this help protect your flooring and belongings.
Being prepared for your project will save you a lot of time.
Always measure the space!
I know this might sound like a bit of common sense, but make sure you measure out your space before buying any office furniture.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times myself or family members have been caught out by an item being a couple of inches too big for the space which ultimately results in the items being sent back.
So before you set your choices in stone, get the measurements of the pieces and check that they will fit into the space easily.
Go for practicality and comfort
When you are choosing new items for your office space, make sure you’re going for items that are practical.
If you need a desk that’s going to have to fit a computer/laptop, printer and other items you’ll use for work, make sure you are choosing a desk that is fit for purpose. I wish I had taken this advice when I got a desk because it’s just not big enough for what I need so my printer is in another area of the house.
When choosing your chair, make sure that it’s comfortable and doesn’t just look good. I suggest reading reviews if you’re buying online and paying attention to what they have to say about how comfortable and durable they are.
If you can and have the option to see the chair in person, try sitting on it and testing it out.
Make it a happy space
Creating an uplifting and happy space goes a long way when it comes to your office space.
Think about the colours you like, the ones that spark happiness and joy in you. Also consider making it bright as this will help make your space feel bigger.
On Pinterest there are lots of office space photos that are great for getting some ideas. So, maybe you could create a vision board to work from to make your space perfect for you.
Also think about adding in decor items such as motivational prints. I love working away and looking over at my prints that have quotes such as “be your own biggest cheerleader” and “you can do it”. Sometimes I just need that little moment to look at them to propel me forward.

The main goal of creating your office space is having somewhere you can go to do work without feeling like you’re sitting at home. It’s a dedicated space for you to do what you need to, so make sure you’re going for a theme that fits who you are and your needs.

Great advice! It’s always important to be prepared and plan ahead before getting started. I love the idea of creating a vision board. That helps you visualize what you want your space to look like and gives you inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing these tips. It’s definitely really nice having a specific place in a room where you can work from. I think it really helps me to not get distracted as easily and to have all my work stuff in one place. My husband and I recently put two desks in a room so we can each have our own little office area and where we can work together.
