With a little creativity and some manual labour, you can give it a brand new look on a budget.
Up-Cycling Old Furniture is one of the most rewarding and sustainable ways to refresh your home décor while keeping those sentimental pieces alive.
Today I want to share how I transformed my great-grandad’s old drawers into something stylish and modern, just by updating the handles.
This simple project proves that even the smallest details can make a huge difference.

Why Up-Cycling Old Furniture Is Worth It
When you up-cycle, you save money, reduce waste, and create one of a kind pieces that reflect your personal style.
Instead of buying something that mass produced, you get to design furniture that feels unique to you.

My drawers for example, were more than just storage.
They are full of memories from my childhood like when I would be sitting at the dresser, brushing my hair and singing at the top of my lungs.
Or when I decided it would be hilarious to jump on my Great Grandads bed from them, nearly breaking my neck in the process.
Throwing these drawers away would have been heartbreaking.
But, giving them a modern update meant I could keep the memories and still enjoy a fresh look in my room.
If you’re new to Up-Cycling Old Furniture, updating drawer handles is one of the easiest and most impactful projects you can start with.
Starting With a Much-Needed Refresh
The drawers I inherited had peeling wood, a cracked mirror, and handles that had seen better days.
I couldn’t bare to see them thrown out, so knew that a make-over was in order.
I started by sanding down the surface and painting the frame a crisp white. Then I covered the tops with Fablon with a marble pattern for a modern finish.
The transformation was already looking amazing, but the old handles stood out in the worst way.
They were scratched, painted over, and didn’t suit the new design at all.
It was clear they needed a makeover of their own.

The Power of Drawer Handle Makeovers

Drawer handles might feel like a small detail, but trust me, they can make or break a piece of furniture!
Old, dull handles can drag down the whole look, while shiny refreshed ones pull everything together.
I knew I wanted something elegant but modern, and when I spotted the Rust-oleum rose gold spray paint in a clearance section at a home DIY store, it was love at first sight.
For just £3.99, I had found the perfect solution for my handles.
That’s the beauty of Up-Cycling Old Furniture.
You don’t need to spend a fortune!
Sometimes, one affordable product can change everything.
How to Up-Cycle Drawer Handles (Step by Step)
Ready to give your own handles a glow-up?
Here’s exactly how I did mine and products I would recommend for the project.
Preparation, what you’ll need:
- Spray paint that matches your material such as spray paint for metal or weather resistant spray paint etc.
- Protective sheets
- Clear sealant spray
- Long piece of wood
- Nails
- Hammer
Step 1: Prep the Handles

For prep I found a spare piece of wood we had and hammered in 6 nails to hold the handles on.
Because the handles were hollow inside, they slotted neatly onto the nails, making them really easy to spray all at once.
This trick also allowed them to dry evenly.
I highly recommend this method because here I am in 2025 and I STILL use this same piece of wood.
It’s been super handy for other home DIY projects.
Step 2: Protect Your Space
Spray paint gets absolutely everywhere if you’re not careful, so make sure to protect your space.
I laid plastic bags with paper down on top of the grass to protect it and it worked great.
When using spray paint, or any DIY spray, make sure to do it in a well ventilated area or outside to avoid breathing in fumes.
For safety measures I recommend protective masks and/or eye wear depending on the project.
Step 3: Spray With Colour
Once everything was laid out, protected and ready to start, it was time to get spraying.
I gave each handle one coat of rose gold spray paint, let it dry, and then added a second for full coverage.
Once dry, I turned the handles upside down and done a light spray over just to make sure no spots were missed.
Step 4: Seal for Durability
Once the spray had fully dried, I finished with a clear seal spray for extra protection.
This step is important, especially for handles since they get touched daily.
It took about 6ish hours for the full project to be done thanks to drying times, but it was relatively quick.
I thought I’d need to leave them overnight but thankfully that wasn’t the case.
Adding the Finishing Touch
When I screwed the newly sprayed handles back onto the drawers, it was like magic.
The once tired, drab drawers now looked so much better and completely in tune with my room’s aesthetic.
They are now chic, functional, and full of life again.
Up-cycling gave me a way to keep a treasured family item while making it feel fresh, stylish and uniquely mine.
Extra Tips for Up-Cycling Old Furniture
If this project has inspired you, here are some ideas to take your own DIY projects even further:
- Experiment with colours – Gold, matte black, or brushed brass all give totally different vibes. Pick one that matches your décor.
- Mix materials – Swap out wooden handles for leather pulls or ceramic knobs for a playful twist.
- Go beyond handles – Once you’ve mastered the basics, try painting drawer fronts, adding wallpaper inside drawers, or stencilling designs.
- Think sustainably – Use leftover paints, scrap fabrics, or secon hand finds to reduce waste.
The more personal touches you add, the more special your furniture becomes.
That’s what makes Up-Cycling Old Furniture such fun, it can be as creative as you want it to be.
Why You Should Try This Project
Refreshing drawer handles is quick, affordable, and fun.
You don’t need advanced DIY skills or expensive tools to do it.
Just a bit of spray paint and imagination can turn a sad old piece into something you’re proud to show off.
And the best part?
You’ll always look at that updated furniture and know you gave it some new life!
Final Thoughts
My great grandad’s drawers now sit proudly in my room, looking modern yet still carrying the memories I love.
That’s the magic of Up-Cycling Old Furniture.
If you’ve got a tired piece of furniture sitting around, don’t bin it.
Instead, grab some paint, get creative, and watch the transformation unfold.
Even the smallest detail, like a drawer handle, can make the biggest difference.
