My 12 Favourite Horrors to Watch at Halloween

With Halloween fast approaching, I’ve got Horror movies on my mind.

This is my favourite genre of movies by far, so I always love making a big deal of Halloween Movie night in our house.

Every year we choose a day to have a Halloween Movie Night filled with family friendly titles until little bear goes to bed. Then the proper horror movies are put on and we spend the rest of the night living our best life.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to share some of my favourite horror movies to watch on our movie night or Halloween night itself.

Drag Me to Hell

I love this movie for so many reasons!

When we first saw it in cinemas, I was pleasantly surprised by how many jump scares I got.

Genuinely enjoyed the whole story and found it a thrilling watch which is why it’s one of my favourites.

Short Synopsis;

“A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point”

Insidious: Chapter 3

When I first sat down to watch Insidious 3, I really didn’t think it would be any good. Honestly, I thought it would be quite boring as a lot of films fall into that after they have already done a few.

But oh boy was I wrong!

I quite enjoyed the jump scares this gave me, the story line was good and I wasn’t bored at all. Overall, a great watch for Halloween. 

Short Synopsis:

“A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.”

Conjuring 

As someone who is quite fascinated by all things paranormal and has read up on the real life Warren family, I was intrigued when this was coming to cinemas.

Thankfully it didn’t disappointed and the whole franchise has been great to watch so far.

Short Synopsis:

“Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorised by a dark presence in their farmhouse”

Conjuring 2

As I said above, the whole franchise of The Conjuring films have been great to watch. They are thoroulghy entertaining and have some great jump scares.

So, why not have a movie marathon with them? I know we will.

Short Synopsis:

“Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit”

Halloween

A Halloween movie night just wouldn’t be complete without Halloween would it?

This absolute classic is still one of my favourite horrors to date as it has all the major horror tropes that made me fall in love with this genre.

Definitely recommend.

Short Synopsis:

“Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again”

Nightmare on elm Street

Again, another amazing cult classic!

A Nightmare on Elm street was another first for me that introduced me to the world of horror as a child.

Looking back I probably shouldn’t have stolen my mums VHS tape and proceeded to watch it on my own, but alas, I did.

It was terrifying and I remember not sleeping for days over the fear of Freddy coming to get me haha. 

Short Synopsis:

“The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death”

Clown

This was a movie I saw on Netflix and I was intrigued by the trailer.

I’m not a huge fan of clowns but thought I’d try it anyway and I’m glad I did! Surprisingly, it was really good and I did get a few scares throughout.

The story was decent and the acting wasn’t awful which I liked. All in all, good movie to watch, especially at Halloween. 

Short Synopsis:

“A loving father finds a clown suit for his son’s birthday party, only to realise that it’s cursed”

The Babadook

Although this is the only horror movie to properly give me the fear, I had to include this as I will be watching from behind a blanket.

Do I know why this terrifies me? Nope! In the grand scheme of things, is it a truly terrifying movie? not really and it’s pretty tame compared to a lot of others. But for some reason this just gives me the chills.

There was just something about this movie gave me chills and I actually cried after watching it in the cinema because my anxiety was all over the place.

I couldn’t sleep without a light on for weeks after this, so in my book, it’s great for horror fans. I will say though, my other half found it to be quite boring so I guess it’s a hit or miss movie

Short Synopsis:

“A single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children’s book titled “Mister Babadook” manifests in their home”

Scream

Here we have another classic horror. Scream for me is one of those films I’ve saw upwards of 50 times and I still don’t get tired of it.

All the movies in the series are actually some of my favourites and I also loved the Scream Netflix series that was brought out.

It’s a great slasher movie. 

Short Synopsis:

“A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorised by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game”

The Evil dead

Talk about cult classics!

The original The Evil Dead is an amazing movie. As someone who enjoys some gore and old school props, this movie makes me tingle with joy.

It’s one I watch every year along with the remake from 2013.

This also has a spin off series called Ash vs Evil Dead which I would recommend as well! It’s got Bruce Campbell taking up his original part as Ash from the very first movie.

Short Synopsis:

“Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons”

The Silence of the lambs

When I first saw this movie I couldn’t help but fall in love with everything about it.

I adore Anthony Hopkins as an actor and in this he plays the part perfectly. I genuinely had creepy chills watching him on screen.

Plus, there is something about cannibalism that both intrigues and terrifies me. 

Short Synopsis:

“A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims”

IT

Ok, so technically the original IT isn’t classed as a movie but rather a mini TV series. But, I couldn’t leave this masterpiece out of the list.

I first saw IT when I was a child, I snuck into the living room and sat behind the cough popping my head out to watch the TV. No one knew I was there so I watched on quietly.

Boy was I in for a shock.

I was absolutely TERRIFIED of Tim Curry as IT the clown. I cried so hard for the rest of the night and my mum wasn’t best pleased I snuck in to watch it.

That’s when I developed my fear of clowns.

Thankfully as an adult I can watch IT no bother and actually very much enjoy the Remake. 

Short Synopsis:

“In 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown.”

Final Thoughts

And there you have it, My My 12 Favourite Horrors to watch at Halloween. I love these movies, well, 11 of them. But, I think they would be amazing to watch at Halloween and I will eventually work myself up to watch The Babadook once more. Or at least I’ll try haha.
