A Helpful Guide to Effectively Managing Your Money

Money can be a touchy subject at times, and especially right now given the current climate of the world.

It’s personal to us, and it can even be emotional. We all have our own relationship with it one way or another.

Whether you’re trying to save up for a new car, paying off debt or just trying to figure out how much money you have in the bank, managing your money effectively can make a huge difference.

So, with that in mind I’m sharing some ways in which you can have a better relationship with money and effectively manage it.

Make a budget

The first step to managing your money is to create a budget and work out your monthly incomings and outgoings.

A budget is simply a plan for how much money you’ll spend and save in the coming months, weeks, or even days.

Start by writing down all your incoming money and finding your total for the month.

Then focus on your outgoings by making a list of all your main expenses such as:

  • Groceries
  • Car maintenance
  • Insurance
  • Rent
  • Phone bill
  • Utilities
  • Child maintenance
  • And more

Starring with the main expenses helps you see how much outgoings you have that are necessities. These will be the things that are non-negotiable in your life that HAVE to be paid.

Other expenses

Once you have those figured out, it’s time to look at what comes out of your pocket every now and then.

This will be things like a coffee on your way to work, dinner with friends, a new book etc.

These are those little extras you get for yourself that are a nice treat but not necessarily a necessity.

How to track your money

How you track these things is completely up to you.

It could be:

  • An excel spreadsheet
  • Notebook
  • Piece of paper
  • An app
  • Dedicated budget sheet

Whatever you use is completely up to you, but make sure it’s somewhere where you can easily access when needed.

Set goals

When you’re trying to manage your money, it’s important to set goals.

Goals are a great way to track your progress and stay motivated.

You might have some specific money goals in mind, for example, saving up for a holiday or buying a new car.

Or you might set goals such as getting our of debt or repaying a loan.

Setting goals can help keep you focused on what’s important, so that you don’t get distracted by unnecessary expenses or purchases.

If your goal is paying down debt and not spending any more than £50 on entertainment for the month, then it’s pretty easy to see when something doesn’t fit into your plan.

Create an emergency fund

An emergency fund is money you can use to help you in the event of an unexpected expense.

It’s not enough to just have a few quid squirreled away for a rainy day, though.

You should go out of your way to save as much money as you can afford, so that when something does come up (and it will, because life is like that) you’re prepared.

Setting your saving goal for your emergency fund

The first step is having an idea about what size of emergency fund would be best for your situation.

This depends largely on how much income you earn and how much debt you have though.

The general rule is having three months worth of your monthly expenses in an emergency fund.

For example, if your monthly expenses are £1,000 then having £3,000 saved up is a good way to make sure you’re covered in the event of an emergency.

But how much you save is entirely up to you and will come down to your personal needs.

Create a debt repayment plan

Once you have a handle on your income and expenses, it’s time to create a debt repayment plan if you need one.

This will allow you to pay off your debts in the shortest amount of time possible that fits your lifestyle.

Following these steps can help you control your money

Creating an emergency savings, paying down debt and setting short-term and long-term goals will help you control your money.

Creating a budget and knowing your incoming and outgoings are the first steps towards becoming financially independent.

It will help you save money, manage your debt and make wise spending decisions in order to save more.

Your goals should be realistic but challenging enough that they’ll motivate you to work hard towards them.

Having a healthy relationship with money can make all the difference

Your relationship with money can be a source of stress and anxiety. But It doesn’t have to be!

The more you learn about your finances, the easier it will be to manage them.

The first step is simply becoming aware of what you have in terms of income and expenses, as well as understanding how each affects the other.

In order to get serious about managing your money effectively in this way without feeling overwhelmed by all of the numbers involved, try keeping a daily log where you write down everything that goes into or comes out of your bank account each day (or week).

Then once every few months compare past entries against average monthly spending patterns so that future budgets become more accurate prediction tools than guesswork based on previous years’ trends (which might not apply anymore).

Final thoughts

With some careful planning and self-awareness, you can have a healthy relationship with money and effectively manage it.
