Valentine’s Day is almost upon us and with everything going on in the world, I’m sure a night in is on the cards for a lot of people  this year.

I’ll personally be spending February 14th watching movies and eating pizza with a little drink thrown in. A bliss night for sure.

So, with a movie night to celebrate love day in the calendar, I wanted to share some ideas on How to Have the Best Valentine’s Day Movie Night.

I’ve put together 5 different movie night ideas to help you set the mood and tone for your evening. Whether you’re looking to indulge in some laughs or get real saucy, I’ve got the perfect night in ideas for you.

From Movie choices to seriously scrumptious snacks, I’ve got you covered. Plus, I have two sheets of FREE love token pintable’s for you to use this Valentine’s Day.

5 Types of Movie Night Ideas

Movie Night Idea #1 – Romantic Romcom Night

A romantic romcom night is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I mean, it is meant to be the most romantic day of the year right? So, why not go the classic route and have a completely romantic night, pulling out all the stops!

Put all the bells and whistles on your romcom night with decorations, good food and movies to make your night an extra special one.

Creating the atmosphere

Creating the right atmosphere for your movie night is super important. It can help set the mood and tone for the evening and make it a success.

When you are creating the atmosphere for your romantic night, you might want to think about the type of lighting that will see you through. I would personally reccomend candle light because it screams romance doesn’t it? The dim lighting is the perfect setting to get up close and personal with your other half.

As well as lighting, think about the sort of decorations you may go for. Rose petals are a big tick on Valentine’s Day, so invest in some to scatter around the dinner table with candles and maybe a vase of red roses.

If you are creating this as a surprise for your other half, think about the flowers they like, or if they don’t particularly enjoy flowers, go for something neutral like a large red candle in a holder surrounded by petals or confetti.

You could also get some balloons for placing around the living room or bedroom, and maybe some ceiling decorations.

But, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make it an utterly romantic night. Go for some larger candles, set the table with lovely themed table wear (poundland has some great choices) and just enjoy being together.

Movie choices

With so many romcoms to choose from, it’s was hard trying to whittle this list down. There was no way I could fit every single one in, so if you don’t see your favourite choice here, I apologise.

With that being said, I decided to go with a range of different romcoms and their sub genres to hopefully hit the sweet spot with multiple different tastes you may have.

  • Just go with it
  • This means war
  • Valentine’s Day
  • The Ugly Truth
  • She’s the Man
  • 10 Things I Hate About You
  • Isn’t it Romantic
  • The Proposal

Movie Night Idea #2 – Cheesy Chick Flicks

Are cheesy chick flicks more your cup of tea? Maybe you and your partner enjoy a good chick flick to keep the mood playful.

If this is more your vibe, why not make this the best chick flick night of you and your partners lives. Lean into that playfulness, theme your night around comfort food and keep it lighthearted.

Creating the atmosphere

For your Chick Flick night, you are going to want to create a fun environment that’s both playful and intimate because let’s not forget that this is a night for you and your other half to spend time together.

You won’t want bright lights cramping your style, instead opt for dim lighting such as LED lights and candles or a dull lamp with LED lights dotted around.

As well as dim lighting, you’ll want to grab all the blankets and pillows you can. If you’re so inclined you could opt for a blanket fort of sorts to really lean into that playful atmosphere.

Speaking of playful, as it’s a Cheesy Chick Flick night, you could also go down the route of matching loungewear/pjs.

Movie Choices

For your movie choices, pick a few that are perfect for you and your partner’s personalities. There’s no use in going for movies you know you’ll not enjoy, so do what feels right for you.

Here are some of my top recommendations:

  • Clueless
  • 27 Dresses
  • Mean Girls
  • P.s. I Love You
  • The Notebook
  • Easy A
  • Bridal Wars
  • Legally Blonde
  • Sixteen Candles
  • Never Been Kissed
  • Twilight
  • How to be Single
  • Bad Mom’s

Food

For the food on your Movie Night, think of comfort foods and those classics that will go down a treat with both of you.

  • Pizza
  • Popcorn prawn rolls with Sriracha mayo
  • Greek Style Nachos
  • Caprese Chicken Pasta
  • Fish and Chips
  • Chinese Takeaway
  • Vegan Steak
  • Vegan Spaghetti Bolognese

Snacks
  • Ice-Cream
  • Popcorn
  • Mini Burgers
  • Pop-Tarts
  • Crisps
  • Cake Pops
  • Oreo Truffle Balls
  • Chips and Salsa
  • Cake

This movie night idea also works for celebrating Galentine’s as well. Getting your girls together, preparing good food and settling down to have a laugh sounds absolutely bliss. You could even make a sleepover out of it and have a ball of a time together.

Why not go all out and get matching PJs, cute party wear such as paper plates and cups, go full on with a themed night for you and your besties.

Movie Night Idea #3 – Horrifyingly Heart Stopping

If horrors are more your cup of tea, then this movie night is the one for you. As someone who LOVES all things horror and having horror be the thing that brought my other half and I together, this is the movie night I’d go for.

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day and most of it is geared towards the lovey dovey side of things, doesn’t mean you have to compromise. Create an evening that suits you and your partner’s taste, whatever that may be.

Creating the atmosphere

For this movie night you might want to think about going for a very dull or dark ambience. You could make sure no lights are used or if you do need some light, very dim led lights or candles.

Creating the mood is so important for having a romantic yet horrifying vibe. You could also opt to use black and red rose petals for decorating the room and if you really wanted to make a big thing of it, black heart balloons with helium.

Also get yourself some blankets or duvets on hard for cuddling up under whilst watching the movies. Get nice and close to your other half and enjoy being together celebrating love day your own way.

Movie Choices

Some Movie choices I would personally recommend for a horror movie night on Valentine’s Day are:

  • Scream
  • Bride of Chucky
  • Ready or Not
  • The Conjuring
  • Midsommar
  • Get Out
  • Carrie
  • Orphan
  • It Follows
  • Escape Room
  • Evil Dead
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Don’t Breath

The reason I chose these movies is because there is an element of love or relationships within the movies. It may not be the main focus, but an undertone of it is still there, even if it’s not the good kind.

As it is Valentine’s Day you’ll be celebrating, I thought having movies with love or relationships depicted was a good route to go down. However, you don’t have to go for them, just make sure that the movies you do pick speak to you and your other half. That will make it so much more enjoyable if they are to your liking.

Food

If you’re opting for a dinner with your movie night, here are some of my top suggestions –

  • Pizza takeaway/Homemade Pizza
  • Hot Pepper and Onion Pizza
  • Togarashi tomahawk
  • Enchiladas with Pumpkin Seed Salsa
  • Seared Salmon with Spiced Sweet Potatoes
  • Pumpkin Curry with chickpeas (vegan safe)
  • Kidney bean curry (vegan safe)

Snacks

For snacks I would recommend going for the classics such as Popcorn and chocolate. But, some other ideas are

  • Pretzels
  • Handmade ghost or bat cookies
  • Dark chocolate dipped bananas
  • Steak nachos
  • Smoaked paprika potato chips and dip
  • Mini hot dogs / Mini faux meat hot dogs for vegan option
  • Mini burgers / Mini faux meat burgers for vegan option

Movie Night Idea #4 – Amazingly Action Packed

Action more your scene? Do you enjoy the thrill of watching an action packed movie but also getting some action *wink wink*. Then this option may be the choice for you.

Put together an amazing night filled with Action movies, good that packs a punch and some bedroom (or other rooms if you’re feeling adventurous) activities.

Get intimate with your partner and get that action!

Creating the atmosphere

For your action packed night, the atmosphere is going to be a great help in setting the mood and lending to the overall feel for the night.

You might want to start by thinking about how your night is going to flow. Will you start with a meal, then onto movies then into the bedroom? Will you watch movies in the bedroom and transition to your own action once the movies are finished? Think about how you want things to flow, or if you just want to wing it.

Once you’ve got a plan in place whether that be a plan to have no plan or have it loosely mapped out, it’s time to get started setting the scene.

Go for romantic and loving lighting. You could achieve this by using coloured light bulbs in red or pink, or by using coloured LED lights to really get the loving vibe across.

Also think about if you want to introduce some adult games to spice things up a bit. It may be a movie night, but that doesn’t have to exclude adding in other activities to lend to the mood if you catch my drift.

Movie Choices

When you’re picking out the movies for your action packed night, it might be a good idea to choose one movie you really want to watch the whole way through, then a movie that can be turned off if needed.

This helps avoid any issues of “but I really want to watch this” if things are turning a bit more racey. Maybe choose a title you’ve both watched before so there’s no fear of missing out.

Here are some of my top picks for action movies for Valentine’s Day:

  • Red Notice
  • The Matrix
  • The Meg
  • Baby Driver
  • Ready Player One
  • John Wick
  • Birds of Prey
  • Hunger Games
  • Taken
  • Casino Royale
  • Mr & Mrs Smith
  • The Mummy
  • Dead Pool

Food Choices

To create a fully immersive experience on your Action packed night and fuel up for your Valentine’s night activities, it only makes sense to indulge in some seriously good food that packs a punch. Here are some ideas on what to eat!

  • Steak and chips
  • KFC style fried chicken
  • Pork rib chops with garlic and sage calvados sauce
  • Creamy chicken curry
  • Garlic Butter Chicken with Spinach and Bacon
  • Truffled mushroom pasta with burrata (Vegetarian option)
  • Vegan friendly KFC style fried chicken
  •  Creamy Spicy Sun-dried Tomato Pasta (Vegan option)

Snacks
  • Popcorn
  • Chips & Dip
  • Nuts
  • Chocolate
  • Mini Hot Dogs
  • Creamy Avocado Hummus and Oatmeal Crackers
  • Oven Tomato Chips

Movie Night Idea #5 – Fulfilling your Fantasy

Do you want to create a themed night that’s filled with fantasy? From the movies to the time you spend together, why not add in a bit of spice to your Valentine’s plans.

A fantasy night is the perfect way to make a night truly special in more ways than one.

Creating the atmosphere

The atmosphere that you create is going to be completely unique to the fantasy you are trying to create.

Are you going to have a fantasy night where not only do you watch that genre of movies, but also play out the bedroom fantasies you and your partner have?

Will it be a fantasy night filled with out of this world food, dress code and transforming your space into a different world?

No matter what route you go down, you’ll want to think about building the night around your vision.

Pick out lighting choices, candles, LED lights, coloured light bulbs, no lights at all, will help to set the tone.

Going for decorations or creating a space that’s fully immersed into your chosen fantasy will really help to tie the whole night together.

Treat this Fantasy night as something unique and special, because that’s what it should be. A night for you and your partner to be together and celebrate in a way that may be new to you.

Movie Choices

Your movie choices will be completely based on you and your partner preferences because in the world of fantasy, there’s so much to choose from.

You could get lost in a magical realm, explore space or sail the seas. The choice is all yours.

Here are some of my top fantasy picks:

  • Star Wars
  • Avatar
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Stardust
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Avengers
  • Jumanji The Next Level
  • Venom
  • 300
  • Ghostbusters
  • Harry Potter

Food choices

For your fantasy night, you might want to think about doing things a little differently like a candlelit dinner on the floor by the fire, or a picnic in the living room. With this night it’s all about doing things a little differently with romance thrown in.

Here are some ideas on what to prepare for your fantasy movie night.

  • Chicken with Smoky Romesco Sauce and Garlicky Greens
  • Easy Cheesy Fondue
  • Surf and Turf Steak and Lobster Tails
  • Creamy Chicken Roulade with Spinach and Mushrooms
  • Vegetarian Biryani
  • Fried zucchini with Dipping Sauce (Vegan Option)

Snacks
