How to set sustainable New Year’s Resolutions – [Updated for 2026]

I love a good new year’s resolution!

There’s something so satisfying about setting resolutions and accomplishing them, isn’t there?

Every year I have a ritual where I take small pieces of paper, write my resolutions out one by one, and then fold them and keep them in a jar.

But there’s one thing that makes resolutions so much more likely to succeed and that’s planning ahead.

That’s right, if you want something to actually happen in the New Year, it has to be planned out.

It’s not enough to just say them out loud or write them down once. You have to put in the effort and make a plan on how you will go about achieving your goals.

And that’s why I have some tips on how you can successfully set sustainable New Year’s Resolutions.

Write down your goals

Writing down your goals is a great first step to creating a plan of action for sustainable New Year’s resolutions.

Find yourself a good notebook that you can use to keep track of your resolutions and update plans regularly.

I find that taking a page for each goal works best. Write out the goal at the top of the page and then begin to structure a plan of action below.

Here are some things to think about when writing down your resolutions:

1. Write down your goals.

2. Write down the reasons you want to achieve these goals.

3. Write down the benefits you will get from achieving these goals.

4. Write down the obstacles that could get in the way of achieving these goals.

Make a plan to accomplish your goals

To make your goals more manageable, break them down into smaller steps.

This will be key to helping you succeed with your sustainable New Year’s resolutions.

For example, if you’re trying to exercise more and get fit, instead of setting a goal to go from never exercising to going for a run every day of the week, set smaller goals like:

I will run 3 times this week” or “I will walk at least 10 minutes each morning.

This step-by-step approach makes it much easier to identify what is really needed in order for you to reach your goal. Try being as specific as you can when writing out your plan of action.

Let’s take the exercise goal for example, write down when and where you want to start running.

Think about what you will need clothes wise, what is the weather like?

Take all factors into account and plan accordingly.

This gives you a chance to see how realistic your plan is before committing fully.

Track factors that may affect success

Also keep track of other factors that may affect your success when it comes to your sustainable New Year’s resolutions.

Consider whether or not there are enough resources available (i.e., equipment, space, money) and make sure that they won’t be disrupted during the time frame when they’re needed most.

For example, if it’s wintertime and there’s still snow on the ground, maybe think twice about going out for an early morning run.

It may also be helpful to get yourself a fitness tracker watch or fitness journal to help track your progress.

Find a support network

Although working on yourself for yourself is very rewarding, finding a support group that will help keep you on track and celebrate your success with you is a great motivator.

Here are some ways to create that support network:

  • Get help from a friend or family member.

  • Join a group of like-minded people.

  • Find a coach or mentor, who can give you guidance and support through the process of achieving your goals, whether that be exercising more, being more productive at work, or whatever else is on your list.

  • Find a support group: If there’s someone who has already gone down this road before you and succeeded in their journey, ask them how they did it!

Remind yourself it’s not forever and ever

Make a plan and be flexible.

Make a plan for your New Year’s resolution, but remember that it’s not forever and ever.

You can change your mind if you need to and adapt goals to better fit your life. It’s not set in stone and change is okay, it’s part of life.

It’s okay if things don’t go as planned and don’t beat yourself up over mistakes or failures, just try again!

Set realistic goals

You can’t make a resolution that you don’t know how to achieve.

If your goal is to run a marathon, but you’ve never ran before, it’s probably better to set a smaller goal first.

You might want to start out with just walking or jogging around the block a few times each week.

Once you feel comfortable doing this regularly, then set another small goal for yourself like running one mile.

And once that becomes routine and easy, add another mile on until eventually you’re ready for the full marathon.

If it’s not realistic, it’s not sustainable

This same concept applies when setting any kind of sustainable New Year’s resolution! If your goal isn’t realistic, it won’t be sustainable over time because it will become too hard or impossible to keep up with.

One of the main reasons people give up on resolutions is because they don’t see quick results after setting big goals.

It takes time to work on ourselves and we need to plan for that.

Having big dreams and bold goals is great, but cut them up into smaller, more manageable goals to make them more attainable.

Final Thoughts

There’s no right way to set or keep resolutions.

Everyone is different and what works for one person may not work for another.

But, planning ahead and setting realistic, achievable goals will set you on the path to success.

You can use some of these tips to help yourself along and make sure you’re on track with your goals, but at the end of the day it’s all about doing what feels right for you.
