This Lie Will Kill You Spoiler Free Book Review

This Lie Will Kill You Spoiler Free Book Review – [Updated for 2025]
I am a huge fan of horror, mystery and crime fiction. When I was an avid reader, before having little bear, they were my genre of choice.
Now that I’m reading regularly again, I remember why.
I picked up This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher when doing the weekly food shop after reading the back, and boy am I glad I did. Unlike my review of Queenie, I don’t want to include any spoilers.
I’ll be trying my hand at a book review today that will let you in on my thoughts without spoiling it for anyone in case you fancy reading it. So no spoilers today.

About This Lie Will Kill You
This Lie Will Kill You is a fiction mystery thriller where 5 teens are lured to a mansion with the promise of winning a scholarship.
But their lies are soon uncovered.
It has been described as Clue meets Riverdale, and although I haven’t read Clue, I do watch Riverdale and I can kind of see why that connection has been made.
Much like Riverdale, the story is exaggerated in a way that makes some parts completely unrealistic, but that doesn’t bother me as it is a fiction book.
I didn’t go in with the preconceived notion that this story would mimic real life and I would suggest if you are going to pick up the book, you do the same.
It centres around a small town with seemingly ordinary teens living their life but there is a lie that all of them share. A lie that is brought to the surface in a game I would compare to cat and mouse.
Although it centres around the one event, a lie that has been covered up, the story progresses through all of them sharing their part in it and uncovering the truth.
This Lie Will Kill You Synopsis
“One year ago, there was a party. At the party, someone died. Five teens each played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth.
But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize.
Of course…some things are too good to be true.
Now, they realise they’ve been lured together by a person bent on revenge, a person who will stop at nothing to uncover what actually happened on that deadly night, one year ago.
Five arrived, but not all can leave. Will the truth set them free? Or will their lies destroy them all?”

My Thoughts
For this book being my first Thriller Mystery book easing my way back into that genre, it really helped me remember why I love this sort of story.
This Lie Will Kill You had everything I needed!
Plot twists, surprises, tension and a story that kept me gripped! So much so, that I finished it in a night which is an achievement all on its own as I’m a slow reader.
As little bear lay in my bed, complaining of being sick, I couldn’t sleep, so I put my time to better use than staring at the ceiling worrying.
It was a bit rocky to begin with when the characters were being introduced. I felt like some descriptions were added in about certain details that weren’t needed, so I was questioning whether this would be one for the DNF (do not finish) pile.
Once the teens reached the mansion however, I was hooked.

A good balance
The story is told in the third person from each character’s point of view, switching between them which took a little getting used to.
I didn’t mind that though, I sort of pictured it like a movie, switching between characters to help the plot line progress.
I liked the set up as it made the story more interesting for me and helped to understand the characters a little better.
There were a few twists in the book, some of them I saw coming and others I didn’t. It was a good mix and I found myself on the edge of my seat, excited to take in the next part of the story.
Although I did enjoy the plot, I felt like in some instances that it could have been described a lot quicker and then at other parts felt like more description was needed.
Eventually a good balance was found, and the story progression went at a good pace.

Final Thoughts
The end of the book was the best part for me. I was hooked for the last 10 chapters and right at the end my jaw was dropped.
There was a twist I did NOT see coming and I like to think of myself as a plot twist master because normally I am the first person when watching a movie or the likes to call it, the major twist.
But this one, nope! It threw me off my game.
Overall I really enjoyed the book.
I was on the edge of my seat at parts and although it was clear who one of the antagonists were early on, I still enjoyed the story and I could see this being made into a movie, which I would thoroughly enjoy.
If you’re looking for a young adult Thriller Mystery that is an easy read, I would suggest picking up This Lie Will Kill You.

Lovely review, Jordanne. I’m too much of a wuss to read these genres but enjoy watching them on telly. I know, strange. 😂
This sounds incredible! I’ll definitely be adding this one to my list. Even though this book had some twists you could see coming, I’m glad the last few chapters were jaw dropping and unexpected! Thanks for sharing your review and for the recommendation! 🙂
