5 Simple Ways to Have a More Productive Day [Updated – Feb 2025]

Having a productive day where my to-do list is all ticked off and I’ve accomplished a lot is such a fantastic feeling.

Cosy days in relaxing and indulging in lazy self-care is great, but I do also love having a productive day.

Although I have always quite enjoyed being busy, I went through a period of time where I let myself fester and didn’t do too much. I felt like there wasn’t much point and my motivation went out the window.

But, I managed to get over that and start implementing some changes in my life that helped up my productivity.

So, I wanted to share those tips with you all in-case you need some guidance or help.

1. Plan your day the night before to have a more productive day

Planning your day the night before is a great tactic to use when you know what you want to accomplish.

By writing out your to-do list and planning your day, you save time and have a chance to prepare yourself for it.

Start by getting some paper or a dedicated to-do list planner like this one on my Etsy store – Digital and Printable Weekly & Daily To Do Lists.

Once you have something to plan your day on, go ahead and think about the activities or tasks you want to accomplish in your day that need done.

Or it could be events you have coming up to help remind you and plan your day around it by blocking out your time.

This could be things like:

  • Feed animals
  • Water plants
  • Have breakfast
  • Workout
  • Read book
  • Gardening
  • School drop off and pick up
  • Food shop
  • Birthday dinner
  • Date night
  • Work meeting
  • Dry cleaners
  • Hair appointment

After creating your to-do list, take some time to prep anything you can the night before.

By doing this you save time the next day having it all set up for you.

These could be tasks such as:

  • Lay out clothes
  • Set up mug with coffee
  • Prep nails and hair
  • Create shopping list
  • Pack bag

2. Write down your goals for that day and make sure they’re concrete and measurableโ€”not just “write report”

A common problem among people is not setting concrete and measurable goals.

This can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, which are not conducive to productivity.

Writing out your goals for the day like this help you to feel good about the little steps it took to get to the overall goal. Having things to measure our progress with helps to keep us motivated to keep going.

For example, instead of just writing “write report”, write down exactly what it is you plan to accomplish by the end of the day.

Here are a few examples of what that looks like:

  • Write an outline for report
  • Conduct interviews with people
  • Source references
  • Add in graphs and statistics
  • Source photos

3. Wake up early to have a more productive day

Waking up early is the best way to start your day.

You’ll be more likely to get things done if you’re able to have a nourishing morning routine and to make sure you’re getting the time to do so.

Waking up early also helps our productivity because we are more likely to be in a good mood, have the time and have more motivation to get started.

There are many benefits to waking up early such as:

  • Improving mental health
  • Enhanced organizing skills
  • Better quality sleep
  • More Energy

Try getting up just 30 minutes earlier than usual (or even an hour earlier!) and see how much easier it makes your morning routine go.

4. Structure your time around “deep work,” or tasks that require your full attention, by scheduling them for the times when you can focus best, without distraction

To make sure you’re being productive, schedule your deep work for the times when you can focus best.

This is often when you’re not distracted by other people or the outside world. Deep work requires uninterrupted concentration on a single task. You can’t do that if your phone keeps buzzing with notifications, or if someone walks over and asks how things are going.

Deep work is important because it helps us achieve more in less time.

If you want to be an effective worker without burning out or feeling overwhelmed all day long (and trust me: I’ve felt those things), then it’s crucial that we learn how to build our own structure around this kind of focused work.

5. You can become more productive by keeping records of what you have already accomplished

Keeping a record of things you have accomplished is a great way to keep you feeling motivated and in turn, productive.

It’s good to keep a diary where you list all those little achievements that make up the end goals.

Here are some examples:

  • Saved my first ยฃ1000
  • Started home workouts
  • Passed theory test
  • Got full marks at school
  • Secured my first client
  • Lost my first 10lbs
  • Handed in final repot
  • Had that first date
  • Ate three meals
  • Dyed my hair
  • Got a piercing or tattoo

It’s also good to write out all things you want to achieve on your to-do list and tick them off as you go. This has the same effect of keeping you motivated by seeing the tasks that are already complete.

Final thoughts

These five tips can help you to become more productive, but the most important thing is to start small and keep track of your progress.

Learning good habits takes time, so don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t feel like things are improving right away.

If anything, try a few more days with these strategies in mind and see how much better you feel afterwards!
