Finding The Best Affordable Alcohol Markers
When I first started colouring, I thought only expensive markers like Ohuhu or Copic could give me pro results.
Oh how wrong was I!
Over the years some of the best markers I’ve tried have been the affordable ones, which just goes to show that a higher price doesn’t automatically mean “the best”.
Are markers like Ohuhu and Copic good? Of course they are!
They are so widely used and recommended within the colouring and art communities, but not everyone can afford their price tags.
Where my obsession for affordable alcohol markers began
I’ve used colouring as a form of self-care for years now, but in 2023 during the worst year of my life, I turned to colouring as a way to help me cope most nights.
But, with a new baby on the way I couldn’t justify paying the high prices every few months when my pens ran out.
(I was colouring a lot during my pregnancy and forever using all the ink up)
So, I’ve been on a mission since to find budget markers that tick the following boxes:
- Smooth, streak free application
- Good colour variety
- Dual tips (brush and chisel or fine)
- Blendability
- Sturdy nibs that don’t fray
- Long lasting ink
- Price
As you can see, there are a fair few requirements, and I’m so pleased to say I think I’ve finally found my must haves that tick all the boxes.
The Best Affordable Alcohol Markers
Before we go any further, I just want to say that I genuinely own and use all of the pens mentioned in today’s post.
I use them regularly and have repurchased each a few times.
These are the pens I personally use and 100% recommend because I LOVE them all.
1. Decotime Alcohol Markers
First up on the list is the Decotime markers that are an absolute dream to use!
These markers are some of the newer ones I’ve been trying this year, and I reach for them all the time now.

- Additionally, they have never dried out for me
- Brush tips are also super smooth to use
These Decotime markers are easily some of the best affordable alcohol markers for beginners.
I highly recommend them, especially for the brush tips, they are my favourite to use.
2. Tongfushop Markers
Next up is the Tongfushop alcohol markers which were the second budget brand I tried.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much as I bought these on a whim, but these pens are honestly game changers.

- Dual tips with strong nibs
- They are also excellent for blending and doing gradients
- To date I’ve not experienced any dry pens
- Additionally they have juicy ink which I LOVE
Although these pens are my go to most of the time, in the name of transparency there is one detail that annoys me.
I’ve found that sometimes, some pens are EXTRA juicy and they bleed when colouring at times.
This doesn’t put me off though because the price point and how good they work are *chefs kiss*.
I highly recommend the Tongfushop alcohol markers, they are so good.
3. Halobios Alcohol Markers
Next up are the Halobios markers which are another reliable gem I’ve kept in my markers stash for a bit now.
With a decent price tag and vibrant colours, it’s no surprise why I reach for these markers time after time.
I’ve personally bought:

- Incredibly juicy ink
- Long lasting with good ink flow
- No streaks, even on larger fill areas
- They blend like a dream
- Also, they are such vibrant colours!
To date these affordable alcohol markers have never let me down, they always preform so well.
However, my only criticism, if you can call it that, is that the colours are so vibrant.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love using the colours but compared to the others on the list, their shades tend to run quite bright.
These are perfect for neon scenes I find, and great for doing psychedelic themes which are amongst my favourite to do.
4. Spectrum Noir
Last but by no means least on this list of affordable alcohol markers is Spectrum Noir, the first alcohol based ones I ever tried.
I picked up a set of six Spectrum Noir markers from a discount store one day back in 2022, and I fell in love.
They were a dream to use and perfect for helping me figure out using alcohol markers.
The blending was smooth and I LOVED the results, compared to my water based markers, they were 100x better.

Although I adore these markers, they are on the higher end of the budget options, so I dont buy them very often.
But, I do like to make sure I have a few to hand, especially when I’m using thicker paper.
Their skintone sets are my favourites to pick up as they preform beautifully, I would definitely recommend keeping a set in your arsenal.
Bonus Colouring Supply Reccomendations
Using alcohol markers are great for colouring, but there is also a whole world of other art supplies you could use to make your pictures POP!
Here’s extra supplies I recommend and why:
- Acrylic Markers – Great for covering lines to add own details. Also good for adding details or highlights. I highly recommend these NICETY Acrylic Paint Pens.
- White Gel Pens – These are good for adding in subtle details to enhance the overall look. My personal favourites are the SAKURA Gelly Roll Basic White Gel Pens.
- Coloured Gel Pens – Also used for adding in details, and great for creating patterns or helping details stand out. The ones I like the most are the Shuttle Art Gel Pens, highly recommend.
- Colouring Pencils – Coloured pencils are great for layering when using alcohol markers as a base. Additionally, they are perfect for adding shading and details. The ones I use most are the KALOUR Coloured Pencils, the are fantastic.
