8 Simple Ways to Create a Cosy Home for Autumn

There’s something magical about switching out the light and airy spring/summer decor for deeper tones, soft textures, and warm touches that instantly make your space feel snug.

Creating a Cosy Home for Autumn doesn’t have to be difficult, it’s about small, thoughtful changes that make a big difference.

So, let’s dive into some simple ways to get your home ready for autumn shall we?

1: Change accent colours for a cosy home for Autumn

One of the easiest ways to give your home that autumnal vibe is by switching up your accent colours.

Spring and summer are all about pastels and light, airy shades. Autumn on the other hand, brings warmth!

Think deep oranges, muted greens, mustard yellows, burgundy reds, and rich earthy tones.

Choosing the right colours

When it comes to choosing the right colours for your home you’ll want to think about your main decor.

Look at what colour the walls and furnishings are as they are your base for selecting colours that work well.

Staple Autumn/Fall Colours

Here you can see a wide variety of colours that are perfect for Autumn.

When I’m looking at what sort of colours I’m going pick for theme, I like to get some swatches on my phone like this:

I like using my phone for this, placing colour swatches against my sofa or wall helps me instantly visualise the theme.

Once you’ve picked your tones, you’re ready to start layering in decor pieces to create that Cosy Home for Autumn feel.

2: Lots of cushions help create a cosy home for Autumn

Nothing says comfort like an avalanche of cushions.

Switch out lighter cushion covers for velvet, corduroy, or knit textures in autumn shades.

Even just a couple of new cushion or cushion covers can instantly change the mood of your room.

Scatter them on your sofa, bed, chairs, or even a window seat!

Your space will feel softer, warmer, and much more inviting.

3: Some throws/blankets

Autumn without blankets? It’s not possible.

Draping a chunky knit throw across the sofa or layering a couple of fluffy blankets on your bed instantly ups the cosy factor.

One of my favourite traditions is pulling out our burnt orange sofa throw in September, it signals the official start of autumn in my home.

There’s nothing better than curling up under it with a cuppa while the nights draw in.

For extra style points, layer textures, think fleece with knit or faux fur with cotton, for that plush, layered look that screams Cosy Home for Autumn.

4: Change your curtains

Curtains often get overlooked, but they can make a huge difference!

Swap out light, breezy fabrics for some thicker, heavier curtains in deeper shades.

They don’t just look warmer, they’ll actually help insulate your home too. Win win.

Tips for picking curtains

Go a little longer than your window length with curtains for that luxurious feel.

Or, you could try layering sheer and thick curtains together for that rich, autumn ready look.

5: Add candles

Candles are non negotiable when it comes to creating a Cosy Home for Autumn.

The flickering glow instantly transforms any space doesn’t it? And I LOVE the seasonal scents that fill the air with comfort.

Think spiced cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla, or woodsy notes.

I like to stick to one scent family throughout the house so it feels cohesive.

Wax Melts

If candles aren’t your thing, wax melts are a great alternative.

Pick out wax burners in autumn colours and let them double as decor while they fill your home with seasonal fragrance.

6: Pumpkin decorations

Pumpkins are the ultimate symbol of autumn aren’t they?

Whether you prefer real or faux, scattering a few pumpkin decorations around your home instantly sets the mood.

Try clustering mini pumpkins on your dining table, adding a couple by the fireplace, or even popping one on your bedside table.

It’s such a simple touch, but it makes your home feel instantly seasonal.

Top pumpkin home decor picks:

Ideas on what do to with pumpkin decorations:
  • Create a cluster on your dining table
  • Add one or two to your sideboard
  • Place a couple next to your fireplace
  • Put out pumpkin cushions
  • Have a row on your windowsill
  • Place one on bed side tables
  • Add one to your bathroom
  • Put up pumpkin decor prints

7: Dried flowers

A bouquet of dried flowers adds texture and earthy beauty to any space!

They last far longer than fresh flowers and often come in shades that perfectly match an autumn palette such as:

  • Burnt orange
  • Golden yellow
  • Deep burgundy
  • Rich caramel

Place them in a rustic vase for maximum effect and let them tie your whole decor theme together.

8: Fairy/LED lights

Finally, let’s talk lighting.

As the nights get darker, warm toned lighting becomes key!

Fairy lights, LED jars, or string lights wrapped around mirrors or shelves create that gentle glow that makes a space feel welcoming.

You don’t need to go overboard, sometimes just a single strand tucked along a shelf or around a mirror is enough to give your home that magical autumn sparkle.

Three ways to use LED lights to cosy up your home

Idea 1 – Jar of lights

Get your hands on some warm toned LED lights, a jar of your choice, preferably one with a lid. You will also need twine/rope, cellotape and scissors for this.

Start by making sure your jar is clean and dry if it’s been near water.

Get your fairy lights and place them in the jar. Create interesting shapes within the jar with the lights or spread them out if needed.

Once you have your lights in place, pop the battery pack in the jar and make sure it’s not very visible in the jar.

Alternatively you can tape the battery pack to the lid of the jar in white tape and attach the lid.

Once the lid is on take some twine or rope and wrap it around the neck of the jar and create a bow. You could also get some thicker rope and wrap it around the jar to dress it up a bit.

Idea 2 – Mirror Lights

You will need a mirror with a frame, fairy lights and something to keep the lights fixed to the mirror.

I recommend using the likes of Coloured tape, Blu Tac, Glu dots and Command strips to attach the string of LED Lights.

Start by taking your mirror and laying it on a flat surface.

Get your fairy lights and start wrapping them around the mirror (this could be around the back or front) and making sure they are fixed to it.

Make sure you keep the battery pack near the bottom or where it will have access to a surface to be placed on.

Once your mirror has all the lights on it, you’re done! It’s super simple and easy to do.

Idea 3 – Placing on shelves

For this you will need your LED lights and shelves in your home.

If you have shelves in your home, add some LED lights to them, running along the back. It’s super simple and easy, and adds that cosy feel in your home.

Final Thoughts

Autumn isn’t just a season, it’s a whole vibe.

Creating a cosy home for Autumn is your excuse to pile on cushions, light too many candles, and pretend your living room is straight out of a Pinterest board.

So why not grab a pumpkin mug, snuggle under a throw, and let your home work its magic while you binge your favourite series.
