From spine-chilling classics to modern thrillers and even family friendly frights, I’ve put together the ultimate October movie marathon guide that will help keep you entertained all month long.
Lets dive in, shall we?
Why October Is Made for Scary Movies
There’s something about October that just feels like it was made for horror, isn’t there?
The leaves are falling, the weather is cold, and suddenly watching scary movies in the dark just feels right.
Unlike summer blockbusters or spring comedies, horror thrives when the nights grow longer.
It’s almost like the season itself gives these films more power.
And let’s be honest, we all secretly love that adrenaline rush of a well timed jump scare don’t we?
Whether you’re clutching your popcorn bowl alone or streaming with friends, the rollercoaster of emotions makes it an unforgettable way to spend an evening.

The Classics: Timeless Scary Movies That Still Hold Up
No October marathon feels complete without visiting the classics, does it?
These films laid the foundation for every horror and thriller that came after. And they did it brilliantly.
They might be decades old, but the chills they bring are as sharp as ever.
Halloween (1978)
Michael Myers is basically the mascot of spooky season isn’t he?
Simple but so effective, Halloween proves you don’t need fancy effects to scare people silly!
Just a mask, a kitchen knife, and the feeling that someone might be watching you from the shadows.
It’s basically the heartbeat of spooky season.

Psycho (1960)
If you’ve ever looked twice at a shower curtain, you can thank Psycho.
Hitchcock’s classic is creepy in all the right ways, with the unsettling Norman Bates, that chilling score, and the kind of twists that make you gasp even if you know they’re coming.
It’s old school horror at its finest and still one of the best scary movies to pull out for an October watch.
The Exorcist (1973)
If you’re brave enough to take on one of the scariest movies ever made, this masterpiece delivers goosebumps on a whole new level.
OK, is it still the scariest? Probably not, but it was way ahead of its time!
During the original release of The Exorcist in 1973, some cinemas were actually handing out “Exorcist barf bags” because so many people were fainting or feeling sick during the screening.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Freddy Krueger is the ultimate villain who haunts your dreams. Literally.
I still get nightmares from time to time of the second movie. That alley scene where Freddy stretches his arms so wide whilst targeting Tina gave me the creeps as a child.
Him going down the alley, scrapping his knives along the alley walls as he runs after her TERRIFIED me.
The Shining (1980)
A haunting cocktail of cabin fever, ghostly visions, and Jack Nicholson at his most unhinged!
From the unnerving twins in the hallway, to Nicholson’s chilling “Here’s Johnny!” scene, it’s an unforgettable movie for sure.
The creeping sense of dread, combined with haunting visuals and a stellar soundtrack really lend to the films uneasy atmosphere.
Its one of those films you can watch every October and still discover something new to shiver at.
Friday the 13th (1980)
No October marathon feels complete without a trip to Camp Crystal Lake, does it?
The doomed summer camp where one of horror’s most legendary villains was born.
While Jason Voorhees himself doesn’t actually become the hockey mask wearing icon until later in the series, the original movie set the stage for everything that followed.
It’s the kind of scary movie that still delivers a perfect mix of nostalgia, chills, and campfire-story atmosphere.

Modern Horror Hits That Raise the Bar of Scary Movies
Horror has had a major glow up in the past decade.
Today’s filmmakers aren’t just focused on gore and jump scares, instead they’re weaving in social commentary, unique storytelling, and a fresh kind of terror.
If you want your October marathon to feel current, add these modern scary movies:
Hereditary (2018)
Dark, intense, and absolutely gripping, Hereditary is a great choice for an October movie night.
Every scene drips with unease, and the shocking moments will have you jumping out your seat.
When you want a scary movie that’s as emotional as it is scary, choose Hereditary.
The Conjuring (2013)
Haunted houses, real life paranormal cases, and spine chilling scares make The Conjuring a must watch!
The tension builds perfectly, the jumps are timed really well, and there will be moments you’re clutching the blanket. Literally.
It’s a modern scary movie classic that belongs in every October movie marathon.
And it just so happens to be one of my favourites too, so I can’t recommend enough. The whole franchise is one of my go to’s for some scary thrills.
Get Out (2017)
Creepy, clever, and endlessly tense!
This movie blends horror and social commentary in a way that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
The suspense mixed with sharp humour in Get Out makes it an unforgettable October watch for sure.
It Follows (2014)
Another of my favourite horror movies, IT Follows is slow, haunting, and brilliantly creepy.
It really is a fresh twist on the horror genre with clever story telling.
The idea of something that just… follows you is simply terrifying to me and definitely sticks with you.
Perfect for a marathon when you want a scary movie that’s a little offbeat and unforgettable.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Silence has never been so scary.
Every little creak, whisper, or rustle feels so amplified in A Quiet Place. It definitely makes for a tense, edge of your seat kinda watch.
The movie is smart, emotional, and scary in a totally unique way which I love.
Ideal for keeping your October marathon varied and thrilling.
Midsommar (2019)
A horror shot in bright daylight? Never!
Except… it actually works so well here and is one of the main reasons I adore the movie.
Midsommar is unsettling, haunting, and full of shocking moments that really sneak up on you.
The unsettling cult vibes mixed with a strangely beautiful and colourful setting make it perfect for an October movie night that calls for something unusual and unforgettable.
Highly recommend!

Thrillers That Keep You Guessing
Not every film has to feature ghosts or monsters to count as scary.
Some of the best October watches are psychological thrillers that twist your mind and make you question everything.
These aren’t your jump-scare kind of movies, they’re the ones that linger long after the credits roll.
Gone Girl (2014)
Twisted, tense, and full of jaw dropping moments! Gone Girl really does keep you guessing from start to finish. Sorta.
Although a well known story, the movie still packs a punch.
It’s the kind of psychological thriller that makes you question everyone around you, and it fits perfectly in a scary movies marathon.
If you like your fear with a side of mind bending drama, this is the pick for you.

Shutter Island (2010)
A movie I thoroughly enjoy rewatching ever October.
Its mind bending, dark, and completely absorbing. Shutter Island will keep you glued to the screen that’s for sure.
The tense atmosphere and shocking twists make it an ideal thriller for an October movie night.
But be warned, it’s one you have to pay attention to, to fully appreciate the story.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Hannibal Lecter. Enough said.
Creepy, clever, and iconic, The Silence of the Lambs blends suspense and horror so so well that it still delivers chills decades later.
A thrilling addition to any October movie marathon, it keeps your adrenaline and curiosity on edge.
Maybe don’t eat during the movie though…
Prisoners (2013)
An intense, gripping, and emotionally charged movie, Prisoners keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I LOVED seeing this in cinemas for the first time. And now it’s one I rewatch often.
The moral twists, tense atmosphere, and desperate search for missing children make this thriller a must add to your October scary movies lineup.
More of a heart racing psychological thriller, it delivers on all fronts. Oh, and Paul Dano, fabulous performance.
Seven (1995)
Another horror that’s one of my ultimate favourites and holds a special place in my heart.
Dark, stylish, and unforgettable, Seven drags you into a chilling world of crime and suspense.
Every twist builds tension, and the shocking ending will leave you reeling.
It’s definitely a thriller to throw into your October marathon for maximum impact.
It’s a long one though and needs your attention.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
“I see dead people.”
Clever, eerie, and emotional, The Sixth Sense mixes suspense and supernatural scares so perfectly.
It’s a psychological thriller that keeps you hooked and fits beautifully into any October marathon lineup.
I remember my first viewing as an 8 year old having swiped the VHS (yes, video tape) from my mums room.
It’s always stuck with me since and I love watching it in October.

Family-Friendly Frights for a Cosy October Night
Of course, not everyone wants nightmares that keep them awake until sunrise.
Sometimes you want a lighter take on scary movies, especially if you’re planning a family night or just want a break from the heavy hitters.
That’s where these gems come in:
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Witches, laughs, and a little bit of chaos make Hocus Pocus pure Halloween fun.
It’s campy, magical, and endlessly rewatchable. I’m sure many of us will have watched it plenty of times.
It’s the perfect choice of a lighter scary movie to include in your October marathon.
Coraline (2009)
A creepy and colourful movie full of eerie charm! Coraline is a MUST WATCH.
The perfect animated movies for just the right amount of spookiness.
It’s perfect for a cosy night in October when you want a scary movie that’s playful but still thrilling.
Monster House (2006)
A house that’s alive and ready to cause trouble? Yes, please!
Monster House is packed with laughs, thrills, and fun scares, making it ideal for a family friendly movie night.
Sometimes the kids movies can be quite boring, but I genuinely enjoy rewatching this one every October with my boys.

Goosebumps (2015)
Ahhh, Goosebumps!
Nostalgic, monster filled, and lighthearted, this movie balances fun and fright so perfectly.
It’s a great pick for younger viewers or anyone who wants a break from heavier horror while keeping the spooky vibe alive.
Plus, those of us who grew up on the original cartoons and books will enjoy this one.
ParaNorman (2012)
A quirky, spooky, and charming film, ParaNorman delivers just the right amount of fright for an October night with kids.
With clever humour and eerie thrills, it’s a great pick for a lighter, fun segment of your scary movies marathon.
My eldest really likes this one, especially the animation style.
Casper (1995)
Friendly ghosts, mischief, and heartwarming moments make Casper a sweet, cosy way to end a marathon.
It’s spooky without being scary and brings all the nostalgic feels.
This family classic is perfect for winding down after a night of creepy thrills.

Planning the Ultimate October Movie Marathon
Now that you’ve got the movies, it’s time to think about how to actually pull off a killer marathon.
October deserves more than just hitting play on any old title.
With a little planning, you can make your scary movies binge feel like an event.
1. Set the Atmosphere
Turn off the big lights and go for candles or fairy lights instead. If you’ve got pumpkin scented candles, even better!
A cosy but slightly spooky vibe makes everything feel more immersive.
I also highly recommend the likes of colour controlled LED strips or Colour Changing LED lights.
They are great for creating a spooky atmosphere.
2. Snacks, Snacks, Snacks!
No marathon is complete without a healthy dose of snacks, is it?
Popcorn is a must, but why not theme it up!
Make pumpkin shaped cookies, dip pretzels in red candy to look like bloody fingers, or simply stick with a big bowl of sweets.
There’s lots of really cool ideas on Pinterest!
3. Create a Movie Schedule
If you’re planning a Halloween watch party, timing is everything.
You want enough movies to keep the night spooky and fun, but not so many that everyone’s nodding off before the finale.
A six hour block from 6pm to midnight is perfect and it gives you time for three movies!
This also includes short breaks for snacks and bathroom trips.

Scary Movie Bonus Picks: Hidden Gems and Cult Favourites
If you’ve still got energy after your core marathon, why not add a few curveballs into the mix?
These films might not make everyones “top scary movies” list, but that’s exactly what makes them so fun to discover.
They’re cult favourites, international gems, and offbeat horrors that will surprise you.
The Babadook (2014)
An Australian psychological horror that mixes grief, motherhood, and one seriously creepy monster.
It’s the only horror I absolutely hate because it was so good at creeping me out.
I still can’t bring myself to watch it.
Train to Busan (2016)
South Korea’s heart pounding zombie thriller that’s as emotional as it is terrifying.
It’s a must watch for sure.
Suspiria (1977)
An intriguing horror classic drenched in colour, music, and pure nightmare energy.
I was utterly glued to the screen watching this one.
The Witch (2015)
Slow, eerie, and unsettling.
This one makes you feel like evil is hiding in the woods just beyond your window.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
A clever twist on the horror genre that plays with all the classic tropes.
This is one of my other half’s favourites.
The Ring (2002, US remake)
Atmospheric and unnerving, this one is proof that VHS tapes can still haunt you decades later.
It’s a movie I’ll always remember thanks to that TV scene.
