10 Must See Thrillers

Longlegs (2024)
First on the list is Longlegs, a highly anticipated movie released in 2024.
With Nicholas Cage at the helm, Longlegs made waves with its gripping storyline and intense performances from all the cast.
This horror-thriller takes us on a harrowing journey as the main protagonist, Agent Lee Harker hunts for a serial killer known only as Longlegs.
It’s a movie full of intrigue and suspense from the beginning! The twists and turns draw you in and keep you guessing till the end.
As always, Cage’s performance is fantastic! And I really enjoyed how captivating it was.
This time he was the antagonist, and I quite enjoyed his portrayal of the character.
The unique blend of psychological tension and action was executed well. Plus, the cinematography was captivating.
I highly recommend Longlegs, especially if you’re a fan of horror and/or Nicholas Cage.

Dog Soldiers (2002)
Next up is Dog Soldiers, a movie from 2002 that is a firm favourite in our house!
Every couple of months we’ll stick it on and each time we’re glued to the screen. It’s a timeless classic that features stellar performances.
The story follows a group of soldiers who are on a training mission in the Scottish Highlands when things take an unexpected turn.
While on their mission, they find themselves battling against a pack of mysterious creatures that quickly turns their mission into a fight for survival.
I love Dog Soldiers for its clever use of suspense and gritty, realistic portrayal of fear! It had me hooked from the start.
This is a must watch if you’re looking for a gripping action thriller with an interesting plot and characters.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Although an extremely popular movie, I had to include one of my favourites, The Dark Knight, in this list of must see thrillers!
As a huge fan of Heath Ledger (10 things I hate about you had me swooning for him!) and Christian Bale, I was locked in to this movie from the day it was released.
Unfortunately my mother passed away in August 2008, and something that got me through was movies, and The Dark Knight was my go to.
So, I’ll always recommend this movie, even if you’ve seen it a million times.
Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a gripping tale of chaos and morality, centered around Batman’s battle against the iconic Joker.
With its intense action sequences and thought provoking narrative accompanied by stunning cinematography, it’s no wonder this movie remains a must see to this day.
Even if you’ve seen it before, take this as your sign to watch it again!

Jaws (1975)
Next on the list is the absolute classic that is Jaws! The quintessential thriller that set the standard for suspenseful filmmaking.
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 masterpiece takes us on a journey to the shores of Amity Island, a beautiful resort town.
This is where we see the community terrorised by a giant great white shark, and the story follows an unlikely crew as they set out to stop the beast.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching it yet, please make this the first movie you watch this week.
One of the best must see thrillers out there!
It’s an absolute classic for a reason and has all the makings for an enjoyable movie night.
Modern movies are great, but there’s something about practical effects and props that make a movie extra special.
Jaws is a perfect example of this as they were able to create palpable tension with minimalistic and practical techniques.
They relied on the power of suggestion and an iconic score to keep us on edge as well as using put if the box prop techniques.
It really is a timeless must see thriller that remains as effective today as it was upon its release.
2012 (2009)
For those of you who enjoy a good action movie filled with suspense and truly thrilling moments, ‘2012’ is a fantastic choice.
This disaster thriller is another older movie, but one that still gives me chills to this day.
Natural disaster movies really freak me out, feeling like it could actually happen is horrifying to me. That’s probably why I love rewatching ‘2012’, because it always gives me chills.
Released in 2009, the movie explores the chaos and destruction that could happen if the world were to face an apocalyptic event.
With Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role, it’s a fantastic movie that will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions.
The movie’s breathtaking visual effects and relentless pace always keeps me glued to the screen from start to finish.
It really is a rollercoaster of a thriller that combines heart pounding moments with a thought provoking narrative about survival and humanity.
Definitely add it to your list of must see thrillers!

Blue Velvet (1986)
Next up on the list is Blue Velvet, a movie that was first introduced to me when I was studying Film & TV at collage.
We had to create an analysis of the movie for class which prompted us to watch it. From then on I always found it a fascinating thriller to revisit from time to time.
Blue Velvet is a surreal and disturbing thriller that takes us into the dark underbelly of a seemingly idyllic town.
Directed by the fantastic David Lynch and released in 1986, the movie is a haunting exploration of secrets and corruption.
After returning to his home town to manage the family business when his father is hospitalised, Jeffrey Beaumont is taken on a wild ride after he finds a severed human ear.
I just love the cinematography and camera angles used in Blue Velvet, they really draw you in to the story. The colours used and stylistic choices they made are also big parts of why I like this movie so much.
What I find most intriguing about Blue Velvet though is that it delves deep into psychological complexities and gives us real insight into the characters.
It’s a must see thriller!
30 Days of Night (2007)
If you’re in the mood for a chilling and intense thriller, then 30 Days of Night is the perfect choice.
Set in the remote town of Barrow, Alaska, we see the townspeople plunged into a month-long darkness which creates the perfect hunting ground for a relentless band of vampires.
Released in 2007 and starring Josh Hartnett as Sheriff Oleson with Melissa George as his estranged wife Stella, the movie delivers a fantastic viewing experience.
The intense atmosphere and gripping storyline had me hooked from the beginning!
The way this movie creates a tangible atmosphere is perfect. I love the way they play with the sense of being trapped, as a viewer I was genuinely on the edge of my seat throughout.
Marrying a remote town with un-ending night that creates the perfect breeding ground for bloodthirsty vampires is *chefs kiss*.
Everything about 30 Days of Night is a must watch in my opinion and I highly recommend giving it a go.
It’s earned its place amongst these must see thrillers.

Escape Room (2019)
As a huge fan of escape rooms, this movie intrigued me to no end, and personally it didn’t disappoint.
From the beginning I was hooked, eyes glued to the screen as I watched one of my fears play out in front of me.
I hate the thought of an escape room being REAL, because I know I’m the first going out. I’m uncoordinated at the best of times and never mind in a life and death situation.
After my first watch, I knew it would become a go to for us when we fancied something a bit tamer than Saw.
Starring Taylor Russell and Logan Miller, it follows strangers invited to an elaborate escape room with a big prize.
What starts as a fun challenge quickly becomes a high stakes game of life and death.
The movie is packed with creative puzzles and intense moments that keep you guessing! And some of the twists are clever, making you question who will survive.
It’s a delightful thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat at times, and although it could be seen as a watered down version of Saw, I liked it.
Escape room is perfect if you’re looking for a suspenseful night that isn’t full of extreme gore.
The Mist (2007)
If you’re a fan of thrilling horror, then you need to check out Stephen King’s movie adaptation, The Mist.
Released in 2007, this movie features an exceptional cast, including Thomas Jane, Andre Braugher (RIP), and Marcia Gay Harden.
The story unfolds in a small town enveloped by a mysterious mist that traps multiple townspeople in a supermarket.
As the mist thickens, the suspense escalates, revealing terrifying creatures lurking outside. The townspeople need to work together to survive, but the real monsters may just be inside.
The Mist masterfully explores complex human fears and group dynamics under pressure.
What I loved the most is that as tensions rise, the human survival instincts clash with morality.
Honestly, I just really appreciate how deep the movie goes and love the stylistic choices that enhance the tension.
It creates an intense atmosphere that sticks with you long after the movie ends.
Each scene is expertly crafted to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I personally believe it’s one of the best Stephen King adaptations there is. The chilling plot and remarkable performances make it truly unforgettable.
In my opinion, it’s a must watch for any horror enthusiast. The film’s cohesiveness is remarkable, weaving horror and psychological drama seamlessly.
Definitely add this to your list of must see thrillers.

Blink Twice (2024)
Last on the list is a fairly new movie which was released in 2024 and Zoë Kravitz ‘directorial debut.
Starring Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie along with a cast bursting with talent, Blink Twice takes us on a thrilling ride.
Working at an exclusive event, Frida (Naomi Ackie) runs into a handsome and charming billionaire, Slater King (Channing Tatum) and is subsequently invited to his private island.
Once Frida arrives on the Island, the story begins to shift, exploring themes of trust and deception.
While the movie excels in its stunning cinematography which creates a visually captivating experience, I felt that the balance between the build up and payoff could have been tighter.
However, I really liked Channing Tatum’s performance in this. I feel it’s amongst some of his best work and showcased his range nicely.
Overall I enjoyed the movie and think it’s worth a watch for sure.
