3 Reasons Why Horse Riding is Good for Children

Why horse ridding is good for children

AD | 3 Reasons Why Horse Riding is Good for Children

Horse riding has always been a dream of mine. When I was younger I wanted a horse so bad that I would constantly pester my mum about it.

But, unfortunately it never happened and I was devastated. Luckily as an adult though I have the pleasure of getting to be around horses from time to time as my partners mum actually owns a few horses.

It’s a dream come true!

As Little bear has gotten older he’s started to ask about riding the horses and one of our goals it to get him his own one day on his grans farm.

In the summer we are hoping to start getting him to the stables more to help out and start taking on some responsibilities to prepare him for what having a horse means.

3 Reasons Why Horse Riding is Good for Children

Teaching Responsibility

Owning a horse is a massive responsibility.

I researched it for hours on end a lot when I was in my teens and having someone in the family who owns them is a great help in teaching Little bear what it entails.

Having a horse and chores on the farm is a terrific way to tach children how to manage their time because it takes a lot of work.

When a child has the responsibility of a horse/pony, it will help them develop accountability which is only ever a good thing in life.

It builds bonds

And when a child has a pet to look after, it can help them build bonds unlike any others.

The routine of getting up and taking care of their responsibilities will help them later in life and that’s one of the main reasons I’m all for getting Little bear a horse.

Plus it means he gets to spend some special one on one time with his gran which can only be good.

Gaining Confidence

Not only will it help with building responsibility, it will also help them gain confidence which is a huge thing I want Little bear to have.

As someone who isn’t so confident, I never want my child to feel this way.

So, anything that can help him build it up is a-ok in my books.

It really does help boost confidence

Being able to go to the stables and do his thing will be a great boost for his confidence. It means he can build up the sense of pride in what he’s doing.

Whilst learning to care for animals that at the moment are considerably bigger than him, can be a way to feel empowered knowing he’s building that bond and getting a sense of independence.

A way to improve Health and Fitness

With having the responsibility of having to look after a horse and getting out each day to take care of those chores will also be great for his health and fitness which I am extremely conscious about.

I never want to push the narrative that he must exercise or work out because I know how damaging that can be.

But I obviously want my child to be in the best health possible. Both physically and mentally.

So, with getting out, working on the farm and being with animals will not only help with his physical health and fitness, it can also be great for his mental health.

I truly believe that when we spend time with animals it can help with our mental state.

I know that when I get to spend time with my cat or be on the farm I feel at peace for a little bit.

It helps to forget about the rest of the world. Building the bond and having somewhere that you can go where nothing else matters will be a helpful escape, especially right now with what’s going on in the world.

In conclusion

So in conclusion, I think having a horse/pony or being able to help look after them is great for helping children build on skills and teach valuable life lessons.

I can’t wait until we can get back on the farm again when it’s safe to do so because it’s genuinely such a peaceful experience and if Little bear keeps up the energy of wanting to get involved, it’s definitely something we will explore.

  1. Aahh I love this, mainly because I also love horses and can attest to them being so so good for your mental well-being. There’s just something about being around horses that makes me feel at peace like you said. ❤️🐴🐎
I definitely need to get back to the stables again bc I just feel so happy there. Thanks for reminding me ❤️ xoxo

  2. Completely agree with this! I used to ride when I was younger and it was so good for my mental health and learning to take care of someone else besides me. It wasn’t my horse, but totally felt like it and was so proud of her! She was a bit of a stubborn one and didn’t agree with a lot of people, so she reminded a bit of myself x

  3. I love every word of this post! I was an equestrian for 10 years, I grew up around horses and I’m so grateful that my parents introduced me to horses when I was 10. I totally agree with you, those 10 years gave me a lot of skills I wouldn’t have now without my horse riding past. Confidence, learning how to be brave and focused when you’re about to jump 1,5meters with a horse, and of course being responsible. These are just some of the amazing skills we can get from being around horses. Thank you for sharing!
