Moving house can be a stressful time. Trying to find the right boxes, losing those much needed items and trying to find the right moving company. It can feel like a never ending cycle until you’re finally in your new home, unpacked and settled.

I’ve been through this myself on more occasions than I care to admit, and when I say I’ve been through this a lot, I mean it! We moved pretty much every year when I was a child, never staying in the same place too long and the whole process was exhausting.

1: Choosing the right Removal Company

Choosing the right removal company to help you get your belongings from A to B can be stressful. Looking through all the online forums trying to find reviews, checking rates and finding a company that’s going to suit your needs.

That’s where Shiply comes in! Getting a quote and finding the right removal company couldn’t be easier.

With Shiply you can get all information at your fingertips by filling in a few simple questions. You put in the area from which you are moving and the area you are moving to, you can choose a specific date for the move or choose whether it’s in a week or so.

There is also the option to let them know what the property type is such as semi-detached, flat/apartment and more. Also, letting them know how many bedrooms there are will really help get a more accurate quote.

It’s so easy!

Once you have provided all this information you are then taken to a page where you will see an array of quotes from different companies plus there are ratings so you know what type of company they are. It really couldn’t be easier.

To see what the process was like I had a go myself and I was surprised at how quickly I got to see some quotes and see how the company was rated.

Using Shiply is fast, easy and free! Plus you can see quotes there and then as well as getting them emailed straight to you. It’s hassle free with no phone calls required.

Personally I think choosing the right removal company is one of the most stressful yet important steps but with Shiply it couldn’t be easier.

2: Give yourself plenty of time

I remember the first few moves we had. They were rushed, we left everything to the last minute and the stress levels were through the roof!

We soon learned from that though and started giving ourselves more time which in the end made the experience a much nicer one and allowed us to be excited about the move.

When giving yourself plenty of time it’s important to factor in the size of the move. How many rooms are there? How many boxes do you reckon you will need? Are you doing it yourself or will you have help?

Asking yourself all of these questions can help when setting out a good schedule. I would roughly give myself one – two weeks to get everything packed properly meaning there is less pressure on me to get it done within a few days.

3: Label boxes appropriately

I don’t know about you, but in the stress of moving house I have often spent hours looking for the things I want and need. Hours are spent searching for items because the preparation hasn’t been efficient. Boxes not having labels, everything mixed up and items strewn about the house.

It took a few moves to finally click on to the fact things would move along much easier if boxes were appropriately labeled.

Making sure boxes have labels is such a time saver. Knowing where items are going helps to keep your stuff organised and easily reachable. I also like to be pretty specific with the labels as well such as:

Kitchen – Mugs, Plates, Cutlery and utensils

Not only does this help you know what’s in what box, it also helps the moving company you have hired identify which box goes where. Such a time saver.

4: Start with the items you use the least

Now, this may sound like common sense, but I can assure you that I can’t be the only one whose brain doesn’t work that way in highly stressful situations. Well, at-least I hope I’m not the only one! And moving house is definitely a highly stressful situation.

I remember the very first time I was able to help with packing. I was around 8 years old and given the task of packing up my room and the upstairs cupboard with towels and such. Getting boxes prepared, items wrapped in newspaper and sealing them up with tape made me feel like a grown up. I know, how innocent?

I got about half way through my room when we stopped for dinner. At the time I was obsessed with Drop Dead Fred the film. I would bug my mum and gran to put it on as we sat at the dinner table every night for about two months and this night was no different.

I really didn’t use my brain when packing

My mum reluctantly said yes because by this point her brain was numb from this film so told me to go and get my tape. Yep, tapes were all the rage then, none of this DVD or streaming service stuff.

So, I ran to my room to get it only to realise that it was nowhere to be seen. With tears in my eyes I called on my gran to help and we soon realised it was probably in one of the boxes I had packed and taped up.

Now, I know this may not be a necessity, it is only a film after all. But, as a child it was to me and it’s the only example that stands out in my mind where I packed things I actually needed. Along with the tape I had packed up my pillows for my bed, my inhaler, some clothes and more.

The main takeaway here is probably don’t let a child pack alone haha. But I hope you get what I’m saying.

Don’t be like 8 year old me, pack with intent

When packing up items, always start with those things you use the least. Keep everything that is a necessity till the end.

5: Create a NEED box

Following on from my last tip, create a box that you will use for the items you absolutely NEED to access easily at any time.

Creating a box that will be used for those items you are going to need the most helps save time, keeps you organised and it’s just generally a good idea.

Our need box always consisted of a kettle, some mugs, a house phone, a couple of books, cleaning items, chargers and other items that are used the most. But your need box may look different, it’s all about making it fit your needs and being able to access your most used items.

It’s just an extra measure that’s worth taking to ensure that when you get to your new home everything you need is at your fingertips. It keeps all your essentials in one place and it’s probably a good idea to keep this box, or boxes with you instead of putting them into the moving van.

This allows you to get those items as soon as you get to the new house in case the movers aren’t there when you are.

6: Make use of a checklist

When you are moving house it can be very stressful and you might find yourself getting confused or muddled up with your plan of action.

So, the best way to stay organised and be as efficient as possible is to use a checklist. Moving checklists are a great way to keep yourself and your home organised. I love being able to check off items and working room by room. I find this helps to increase productivity and make the move go as smoothly as possible.

Checklists are great for making sure that each room is worked through correctly, boxes in the right places, dates for movers in writing and so much more. These checklists can help with a range of things so definitely look into one, you won’t be disappointed.

Etsy is a great place to look for handy printable and digital checklists that will keep you as organised as possible.

7: Make it fun for the Children

This last tip is perfect for those of us who have children in the house while moving. As it can be a highly stressful situation, making sure that the children are having fun and not stressed themselves by the move is imperative to a smooth transition to a new house.

I think we can all agree that keeping children entertained while we have a lot on our plates can be hard. Many times we will find ourselves feeling like we are in a pressure cooker.

So, having a plan to keep the children happy so we can focus on getting the house packed up and ready to move will make a world of difference.

How to keep them entertained and happy

Sometimes it may feel easier to keep the children separate from everything that’s going on within the house. But, it’s much better for them to get involved and feel like they have their own important jobs to do.

I know that some of my favourite memories from moving are feeling like I had a job to do and was allowed to get involved.

Here are some ways you can keep children entertained and make them feel part of the process
  • Draw pictures on boxes that relate to what’s inside
  • Help make a list of things that need done and adding in their own artwork
  • Colouring in pages that represent a home such as a house, utensils, garden and more
  • Ask them to write a list of things they are excited about relating to the new house
  • Draw a picture of what they want their new room to look like
  • Have them create labels for the boxes
  • Give them a pile of items to pack into a box
  • Help with taping up the boxes

Keeping children separate from all the activity that’s going on could make the situation more stressful for not only you but for them. This is all new for the children and it’s not something they are accustomed to. So keeping them involved, asking opinions and just making sure they are ok can make a world of difference.

And there you have it, my 7 Top Tips To Make Moving House Easier! I hope that your next move goes as smoothly as possible and that these tips have been useful for you.

  7. We moved last year and I couldnโ€™t believe how many boxes we packed (and unpacked!). My top tip is purge before you move – sort through as you pack and make piles for charity and the dump/recycling.
