9 Thrillers to Watch on Netflix UK Right Now
Watching movies is something I love to do. And one of my favourite genres is Thriller, along with horror.
Latley I’ve been down the rabbit hole on Netflix with Thrillers, watching as many as possible in the span of a week because it’s the only thing that’s been getting me through at the moment.
So, I wanted to share 9 of the best ones I’ve watched recently. If you enjoy the Thriller genre, I think you’ll enjoy these titles.

Run
I was drawn to this movie from the get go. Sarah Paulson is one of my favourite actresses, I really enjoy her work.
So when I saw that she was in Run, I had to watch it. Plus, the story line appealed to me as it gave me Gypsy Rose Blanchard vibes.
A story I have been fascinated with for years.
Run follows a teenage girl (Chloe) who has a whole host of medical conditions and is cared for by her mother (Diane).
Both Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen give great performances in this thriller which definitely made the movie more enjoyable.
There are times within the film where I was like “C’mon!” as I felt things were drawn out a little but the story made up for this with the twists and turns that came.
I was surprised at points because I didn’t see the twists coming which was nice because I find it hard to be surprised at all with movies these days.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
I LOVE a good Horro/Thriller and this gave me the best of both worlds. I had my eye on this title for a while before I settled on watching it, and I’m glad I gave it a go.
Although it’s no gory, scary film, it was still enjoyable as a whole.
There weren’t any particular great jump scares but that makes it easily a Thriller/Horror you could watch on your own.
There were some great visuals and camera shots which kept true to the horror genre and I enjoyed the “monsters” that were Introduced. But somehow it still all felt a little juvenile.
Gerald’s Game
This title came out in 2017 and it’s one I go back to time and time again. With a great cast and even better adaptation of Stephen Kings novel of the same title, this movie won me over from the get go.
Gerald’s Game might feel tedious to some but for the thriller fans out there, this movie is sure to give you the sense of impending doom.
This gave me the chills!
As someone who is petrified of being stuck in one place and unable to move, this gave me the chills! And the psychological torture that unfolds throughout is one I’m sure a lot of us would be terrified of.
What I liked about this movie is that there’s no “fluff” in it, meaning they haven’t relied on heavy CGI or resorting to the typical tropes of horror/thriller.
The silence is deafening and it truly feels believable. Playing on peoples fears is evident throughout and I feel this movie is very well done.
Nightcrawler
As a huge fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, I knew I would enjoy this movie from the moment I saw the trailers. The first time I watched Nightcrawler was in the cinema back in 2014 and I was obsessed from there.
The movie follows Louis Bloom (Played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a driven reporter looking for work in L.A.
The whole performance from Jake is superb and his acting really makes this movie for me. It’s dark, gritty and disturbing.
It’s a fantastic movie, the acting is on point!
The character of Louis is deep and thought out which I liked because watching what he was going to do next was nail biting.
The things he does to get the story and make a name for himself is shocking but somehow, it’s what I expected from a seedy reporter who only cares about getting the best story.
The Vanished
Did I see the twists coming? No, no I didn’t. Did that make this movie 10x more enjoyable once the end came? Yes, yes it did.
I don’t know what I was expecting going into this movie, I saw it on my recommended on Netflix and thought why not.
I wasn’t overly excited to give it a go but whilst doing my nails it would be good background noise. Or so I thought.
The Vanished ended up being one of those movies that kept me gripped and I didn’t bother with my nails after I got sucked in to the story.
The movie was originally named Hour of Lead but I’m glad they changed it as I’m not sure that would have fitted the over all plot.
The story follows a husband, wife and child taking a camping trip in the RV. Anne Heche plays Wendy, the wife and Thomas Jane plays Paul, the husband.
In the movie their daughter goes missing and from there chaos unfolds. There’s a lot to take in, it’s one of those movies you have to pay attention to and may even need to watch twice to pick up on different details but that made it far more enjoyable to me.
It’s definitely a great thriller and I can’t recommend it enough.
The Perfection
Disturbing, unpredictable and stomach churning at times. This movie has all the marks of a fantastic thriller and I’m surprised there hasn’t been more hype around this title because it’s superb.
The production of this movie really gives this a refined feeling and the camera shots are stunningly done. For me, the cinematography gave this title a huge boost and it’s made it’s way into my top ten thrillers of all time.
The acting as well was spectacular, Allison Williams gave a great performance, you could feel her emotions and got sucked into the story.
It’s twisted and weird, I love it!
I did feel at times like it was a little naff with the plot as there were some unbelievable elements to it but I don’t think having a completely believable story makes a film a great one.
Logan Browning also starred in this movie and her performance was stellar as usual. The story between both Lizzie (Played by Logan) and Charlotte (Played by Allison) came to life on screen and I felt like I was living it with them.
The twists and turns in this film keep you guessing and it’s not until the end that you realise exactly what is going on.
The mystery and smoke screens give this film its suspense and thriller qualities. I like that I thought one thing was happening when in reality I couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Prisoners
I remember when Prisoners came out in the cinema, I was itching to see it as Jake Gyllenhaal was cast along side Hugh Jackman and as I’ve said before, Jake is one of my favourite actors.
The plot intrigued me, as much as I knew it was a heavy topic surrounding kidnapping and children, I knew I had to watch it.
Throughout this movie I was on the edge of my seat.
It’s disturbingly beautiful and the cinematography is exceptionally done.
The performances by both Jake and Hugh were perfection but it was Paul Dano’s performance that gave this movie the creepy and unsettling atmosphere that made it what it was in my opinion.
This was the first time I realised that Paul Dano is an exceptional actor and to take on a role like this one in Prisoners and execute it so flawlessly is a talent in it’s own right.
Not knowing what was going to happen next kept this movie fresh throughout and long after the credits rolled, I was still left with a knot in my stomach.
It got me thinking about the lengths I would go to if Little bears life were at steak and I can’t say I would have acted much differently to that of Hugh’s character.
Seven
An oldie, but my lord is it an amazing film. Seven was a favourite of mine as a young teen, I adored Brad Pitt ever since Interview with a Vampire so I was enamoured with anything he done.
In seven he gives a great performance alongside Morgan Freeman and together they carry the story, making this one of the best films of the 90’s in my opinion.
Seven follows the story of two homicide detectives as they work on a case that mirrors the seven deadly sins from Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.
There’s suspense, disturbing scenes and down right sickening acts that make this movie a thriller for the halls of fame.
The way this movie has been produced is spectacular, the cinematography and ideas that have been poured into this movie is jaw dropping at times, making this a one of a kind.
It’s not your typical cat and mouse detective story and although it’s over two hours long, there’s not a boring moment throughout. Seven has always been one of those movies that stuck with me and for that reason it takes the prime spot of my number one favourite Crime Thriller.
I have read up on this film for hours on end and have lots of trivia knowledge surrounding it, so if it ever comes up on a pub quiz, I’m ready.
Lust
There’s a scene in the movie that surrounds the sin of “Lust”, the killer focuses on the sexual deviancy of the sin and the murder reflects that. It’s single handedly the most gut wrenching and thought provoking scene with in the film.
You don’t see too much which is a good thing, it leaves more to the imagination that way but the whole scene has been shot and set up is an art form all on its own.
The music playing, the colours, the chaos and the sense of impending doom as they make their way to the room where the murder occurred is so well done. As someone who studied film, its moments like this in a movie that get me excited because the subtle details all tell a story.
Fractured
As thrillers go, the Fractured plot is interesting and it’s for that reason it’s made it’s way onto my list. When I first put this movie on, I wasn’t to bothered about it being good or interesting because it was background noise as I played the sims.
But, I found myself turning the sims off and transferring the movie to my TV instead of my iPad because I got sucked into the story real quick.
If you enjoyed Shutter Island, then I think you’re going to enjoy Fractured. It got to the point that I honestly didn’t know what was real or what was a figment of the main character, Ray’s (played by Sam Worthington) , imagination.
I was very surprised at how good this movie was, it kept me guessing and trying to figure out what was going on but at the end I realised I really didn’t have a clue because the twist was not what I was expecting.
It’s a good psychological thriller but you have to pay attention, it’s not something to have on in the background if you want to know what’s going on.

I’ve been wanting to watch ‘run’ for ages now, I’m waiting for my boyfriend to watch it with me because I’m too scared to watch it by myself in case it freaks me out haha! I’ll definitely have to have a look at all the others too!!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is based off a book (I used to read it as a kid). So maybe that’s why it seems juvenile? I’ll have to check it out and see for myself.

Thanks for these suggestions! I love horrors/thrillers and have watched hundreds but I’ve only ever seen one of these which makes this list so interesting! Well, I say I’ve SEEN one but my wife was not interested in Gerald’s Game so I haven’t checked out how it ends and I really want to! There’s so much to watch right now but I’ll have to check out some of these!
