3 Books I’d Love to See Turned into Spooky Movies [Updated for 2026]

Watching movies is a hobby of mine that I absolutely love. I’m obsessed with all things film, especially anything spooky related.

I’ve written about movies a lot on the blog with posts such as Mega List of Movies and TV Series to Watch this October and 38 TV Shows to Watch This Autumn.

As well as watching spooky movies and shows, I do enjoy a good thriller or horror book.

I tend to reach for mystery filled books to satisfy my cravings at night and when I want to take my eyes off the screen.

So, I thought it would be fun to combine my love for books and movies to chat about the books I’d love to see turned into movies or TV Series.

I think these titles would work particularly well around Autumn/October time with their spooky vibes.

3 Books I’d Love to See Turned into Spooky Movies

The books I’ve chosen have been titles that have stuck with me and transported me into their respected world with ease.

As they were so descriptive and easy to imagine, I think these titles would translate onto the screen very well and make for great viewing.

The Last Girl

First up I have The Last Girl because I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The Last Girl starts off by introducing us to the main character, Rachel.

From the get go we are thrust into a world of mystery and crime with a home break-in that makes Rachel move cities.

New to school Rachel just wants to keep her head down and get through it without any attention.

Lucky for Rachel, Saunda takes her under her wing and opens her up to a world of secret societies and mysterious pranks plaguing the prep school.

Joining a club turns out to be a seemingly dyer mistake on Rachel’s part, but how did she get there?

Boyfriends, secret movie nights, harmless pranks and a social life takes Rachel down a dark and dangerous path that only she can uncover for herself.

A truly wonderful read full of twists, turns and impeccable story telling.

The Last Girl as a TV Show

The characters were great throughout and I liked that the world building by its author really painted a picture in my head that felt like I was watching a movie as I read.

This would make a particularly good TV Series as a lot of time passes throughout and if done right, I think it would be great to make up some filler time showing exactly what the characters were up to.

Scenes I’d be glued to

1: The secret club meeting

Seeing the secret club meetings unfold before my eyes and watching the characters interact together would make me so happy.

I’d be glued to the screen watching them as I loved these parts of the book.

It would be nice to see physical characters go through this, bond and watch horror movies together.

These were easily my favourite parts of the book as it felt like I was getting a window into another world that spoke to my soul. I’d love to be part of a secret horror club. 

2: The “Pranks”

Another part of the book I loved was the pranks.

I could just imagine myself standing there watching it all play out from beginning to end. They were incredibly detailed and I think it would be perfect watching characters go through with them and see how it physically would look.

The pranks as well were creative in their own way and I loved figuring out why the character chose that prank in particular.

These could be done with all the horror tropes such as camera angles, music and lighting. I think those would be amazing to see considering the club is all about paying homage to horror.

Also throw in the planning stages as well because I think that would be very interesting to watch.

3: The Halloween party

The 3rd and final scene that I’d be glued to is the Halloween party scene where Rachel goes with Saundra and starts to get scared and paranoid.

As it’s a pretty packed scene with a lot of detail, I would love to see the visuals of a big party at a club.

I think this would be great for showing off costumes and wardrobe design as well as good opportunities for cinematography and sound.

Stylistic choices

When I think of The Last Girl and the style I’d like to see, the following shows and movies come to mind for inspiration.

• Riverdale for its lighting choices and set pieces.
• Scream for its camera angles and overall vibe.
• Stranger Things as I love the world building in it. It’s vivid and thorough. Plus, I really enjoy the visuals and cinematography.

Final Thoughts

I think having this as a new Netflix original would be a big hit with the YA and Teen audience.

It would have to be done perfectly though with knowledge on horror and all the major tropes that make the genre so successful.

Adding in the mystery, characters and everything else to a world so rich in visuals would just be fantastic to see on the screen.

Good Girls Die First

The next book on my list is Good Girls Die First.

The story follows a group of teens who have been lured to an abandoned fairground that sits on an island that is connected to their seaside town.

Lured there by a mysterious figure who happens to know their darkest secrets and is threatening to expose them, the group are gathered together for an experience unlike any other.

Secrets are revealed, friends turn on friends, people die and at the heart of it, no one knows.

Good Girls Die First as a Movie

For this book I think it would be better made as a movie. The reason for this is it all takes place in the same location over a number of days.

As it’s not rich in locations, it would be better to consume as a full movie in one go rather than spread across episodes.

Once the action gets going, it’s full on and there’s always something happening.

To me this would be a great Dark British Thriller set on the outskirts of a seaside town. The way it comes across is very British feeling and I think that’s the point anyway.

Stylistic Choices

This book felt like it had a dark atmosphere with a play on lighting creating shadows and the tension built between characters.

But on the other hand there’s the playfulness of the carnival and the colours that would be displayed throughout.

Seeing the contrast between the happiness a carnival brings and the wreck that has been left due to abandonment and time would be very visually pleasing.

I imagine that it would be covered in dirt, signs broken, a run down fairground that is a shadow of its former self.

Imagining this translated into the big screen would be a great way to set the scene and draw the viewers into the menacing atmosphere that I believe this story has. 

Inspiration for Stylistic Choices

• Stranger Things for the way monsters are portrayed and the amount of detail involved.
• Midsommar for the way tension is built, even in daylight
• The Babysitter for its cinematography and atmosphere

Final thoughts

It would be a great story to watch I think as there’s a fair amount of characters and the plot progresses at a good pace.

Putting Good Girls Die First into a movie format would work well and translate on the screen with ease.

I’d particularly like seeing the characters interact with each other and the different personalities clash.

Emotions ran high with this story so I’d love to experience this in a cinema and feel how tense the energy gets as it progresses.

This Lie Will Kill You

The Last book on my list but certainly not least is This Lie Will Kill You.

The premise of the story is 5 teens are lured to a mansion under the pretence of winning a scholarship, but that’s not the case.

Heading off to what they think will be a perfectly normal night, these teens have no idea what they have gotten themselves into.

Full of mystery and drama, This Lie Will Kill You keeps you hooked and guessing the whole time.

As the story progresses we get more drama and mystery, secrets are spilled and discoveries made as the teens try to figure out exactly what’s happening and leaves us with a big finale.

This Lie Will Kill You as a Movie

Much like Good Girls Die First, this book has one main location where most of the plot takes place. So, I feel this book would be better suited to a movie adaptation.

For me making this into a movie would work well with visuals and storytelling. I can imagine it all in my head and would love to see it visually.

Plus I think the plot is perfect for turning into a script as it’s very focused on the journey it takes you on.

Stylistic Choices

I personally think this book would be better suited as an American based movie as it reminds me of Ready or Not and Would You Rather a little.

Both of these movies would be great to reference when coming up with set design and visuals.

I like the idea of 5 American High School students being lured to a big mansion to undergo a night of terror.

The camera shot potentials are perfect as you could go full on horror tropes with the upward face angle, the tilt and point of view being heavily used.

There’s also potential for jump scares and keeping the audience guessing. I think using the menacing music, low dialog and close up on faces as they make their way around would be *chefs kiss*.

Inspiration for Stylistic Choices

• Would You Rather for the suspense and Set design
• Ready or Not for the visuals and story progression
• Halloween for the suspense and use of sound

Final Thoughts

For me This Lie Will Kill You could potentially be a great thriller movie and become a staple in viewing if done correctly.

Taking on the challenge of getting the atmosphere just right with the perfect actors and set design would be a project I’d love.

It’s moments like this that make me want to get back into the film industry. Taking a good book and adapting it isn’t easy as there can be a lot of backlash.

But I think it’s doable with this story as it does feel like it should be a movie already.

Maybe it’s because you can see where inspiration has been pulled from and there are films similar to this premise.

Overall I’d love to see this on the big screen.
