Christmas eve box ideas for people of all ages!

Christmas Eve is one of my favourite parts of Christmas because we have so much fun indulging in festive activities and spending time together. Plus it’s a mini-Christmas day of sorts for us. My family exchange our Christmas eve bags/boxes which are filled with little gifts that make it even more special.

Creating a Christmas eve box for my son is one of my favourite things to do in the run up to Christmas, each year we make new memories that I cherish forever.

Fun fact: The Christmas eve box tradition is my favourite to organise in December

I’ve spoken about some of our Christmas eve traditions on the blog before, and in it I talked about our Christmas eve bags/box. I spoke about how it fits into our night and the magic it brings. So, I thought it would be fun to share some ideas on making your own Christmas Eve box.

Sharing tips on how to fill them with joy and excitement for my 12th day of blogmas. As it’s my last blogmas post of the year, I wanted to do something fun and light to end on a high note. So I’ll be sharing some ideas on how you can get involved with the Christmas eve box tradition and make your own that will be sure to stay in the recipient’s memories forever. 

So, what is a Christmas eve box? 

When I was a child, we didn’t call it a Christmas eve box. Instead I knew it as the early Christmas present as I was given a bag with some things all wrapped up, ready for me to tear open.

But, as the years have gone on, it’s became a more widely known as the Christmas eve box. With the likes of supermarkets now stocking boxes made specifically for the occasion, it’s now a firm tradition in lots of homes across the globes. 

The Christmas eve box is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a box that you give as a present on December 24th. They are filled with little goodies that are perfect for the festive season and getting children ready for Santa.

The most common items that people tend to put in them are Pyjamas, slippers, dressing gown, treat, teddy, book and activity pack. But, with the box becoming a bigger trend each year, the possibilities on what you can include are endless.

The box is mostly used for Children, but the fun shouldn’t stop there. In our house all the adults get one of their own, well, we get a gift bag with our gifts but it’s the same concept. 

How to create your own special box 

Creating a box is pretty easy, the basics are – get a box, fill it with items, sounds easy right?. And that’s because it is!

But, over the many years I’ve been receiving and giving one, I’ve picked up a few helpful tips that ensure the Christmas eve box is a hit!.

When looking for the perfect box, you can check out sites such as Etsy as they have a whole range of beautiful handmade boxes from small businesses that are simply adorable and look amazing.

Tip! Make it special and unique to the recipient

I personally prefer a box that has a lid as it means I can keep the contents a complete secret. But, there are many different designs such as wooden crates, cardboard boxes, plastic boxes etc. And you can get them personalised, which works great when you have a few children as it has their name on it.

The list is endless when it comes to the kind of boxes you can buy and as I mentioned above, you can get them in the supermarkets as well. 

Once you have the box picked out, it’s time to get filling it with items perfect for festive fun on Christmas eve. My top tip is to personalise the box to fit the recipient’s personality.

For instance, say the child loves cars, think about maybe getting them car themed items. Choose themed items such as pyjamas, toy/teddy, activity pack, shaped chocolate, book etc.

When you tailor the box to what the recipient likes, it makes it 10x more special for them! 

From personal experience, I always remember the gift bags I’ve gotten which feature items that my gran or mum bough because they knew my interests.

For example:

One year I was given a barbie gift bag. I was around 9 years old and barbies were my favourite thing in the world. My mum had gotten me a barbie night gown, barbie slippers, a barbie mug where she was wearing a Santa hat and the rest of the items were in the famous barbie pink colour.

I LOVED that Christmas eve bag, and it meant the world to me. So, because I know how it feels to receive one that had a theme specific to me, I always make sure to do the same with my own son’s box. 

As well as choosing a theme, I make sure to put in a few festive bits like a Magic Key, tray for Santa, Milk Bottle and reindeer food. This keeps my little one excited about Santa coming and keeps the theme of the overall Christmas eve box.

And that’s my take on Christmas eve boxes. I really enjoy making them up and giving them out on the 24th, everyone in the house gets one and I’m in charge of them all which makes me happier than it probably should ha-ha.
