5 series to watch on Netflix UK if you’re a fan of Crime & Mystery
It’s no secret that I enjoy consuming films and series on Netflix. It’s definitely a hobby at this point and I love being gripped by new and entertaining storyline. If I could, I’d consume them 24/7.
Crime related dramas and docuseries are a firm favourite of mine along with anything horror. It very rarely I’ll stray from this genre. So, I wanted to share some amazing series I’ve been watching lately for those of you out there who also enjoy this genre. These 5 Series are a must watch!
The Deceived
Going into this series I was a little sceptical because the trailer didn’t really give much away. I guess that’s a good thing in the long run because I hate when a story is spoiled thanks to a trailer. Although I couldn’t get a grasp on it in the trailer, it pulled me in enough to feel curious so I pressed play.
Having now watched all 4 episodes I’m glad to say that it was quite an enjoyable watch. This is definitely a series you have to pay attention to. You can’t just have it on in the background as it requires your full attention to really grasp the story line. At first my mind was all over the place but I found myself enthralled with the plot.
Filled with lots of what ifs and mystery, it’s truly a gripping series. It’s well shot, the story line is good and I really didn’t want it to end if I’m honest. Although the episodes are almost an hour long, I could have definitely kept on watching. Throughout I was playing detective and at each turn I was wrong! This rarely happens and it’s not until the end of episode 3 that it starts to come together and make sense.
This is a must watch for anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery intertwined with some truly dark moments.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork (Limited Series)
As someone who is a huge fan of true crime I was instantly intrigued by this series when it came up as recommended on Netflix. Limited Series always stick out to me because of course I want to watch it before it’s gone.
The series centres around the murder of a French woman, Sophie Toscan du Plantier. In 1996 she was brutally murdered near her holiday cottage in Ireland and what followed was mass controversy and speculation surrounding her death.
There are three episodes that go through the story with lots of interviews from locals and her family plus the main suspect. I don’t want to give too much away as I found it a very insightful mini-series into the case and I think anyone who is also a fan of true crime would enjoy it.
What really made my heart ache for her and her family though was hearing the interviews about what a nice woman she was. Her son & parent’s interviews were particularly powerful in my opinion and I couldn’t help but feel their pain as they spoke.
Having watched it and listened to the case I’m still undecided on what really happened which has prompted me to dive in deeper reading articles and such.
The Sons of Sam: A Decent into Darkness (Limited series)
The serial killer’s era has always fascinated me. There are many prolific names such a Richard Ramirez, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and David Berkowitz just to name a few who all have multiple documentaries and films made about them. So, going into this series I thought it would be a regurgitation of previous information that’s quite widely known, just presented in a new way.
This docuseries focuses on David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) and more specifically, Maury Terry. Terry was a reporter who became obsessed with the Son of Sam case and began to go down a rabbit hole of conspiracies and satanic cults.
This series goes through Maury Terry’s investigation into what he believes to be a cult that’s responsible for the Son of Sam killings rather than Berkowitz acting alone.
I found this to be very insightful and information was brought up that I had no idea about. It was definitely a gripping watch that’s made me question my own understanding of the Son of Sam case. I now want to go down my own rabbit hole to pursue a deeper understanding.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable watch and I genuinely think it’s one everyone who is a fan of true crime and serial killers should give a chance.
Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer
This documentary mini series follows the reign of terror in Los Angeles caused by a serial killer, aptly dubbed The Night Stalker.
In this series you’ll get a better understanding of the investigation that went into trying to catch the serial killer, Richard Ramirez and the horrific crimes he committed. It’s very insightful and a must watch for fans of true crime and serial killers in general.
There are 4 episodes which delve into the inner working of the case with interviews and recollections of what was going on at the time these crimes were taking place. You’ll hear about how the city and it’s occupants were feeling, the paranoia over there being a serial killer on the loose and how the detectives were tackling this.
I found it to be a good watch and I was gripped the whole way through. I’ve watched quite a few programmes and movies that have surrounded Ramirez and his crimes but I always enjoy soaking up more knowledge and hearing things from different perspectives. This documentary series definitely brought a new light to the case for me.
Mindhunter
This amazing series is based off of the 1995 true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It’s an insight into the beginning of the behavioral science unit and Criminal Profiling.
If you’re a fan of the likes of Criminal Minds then you’re definitely going to enjoy Mindhunter. It’s a slow burner crime series which follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as well as psychologist Wendy Carr. In the 1st season of the series you get to experience interviews they have with serial killers such as Ed Kemper, Dennis Rader, Jerry Brudos and many more.
On Netflix there are currently two seasons to watch and each of them are shot exceptionally well. It’s an amazing watch that keeps you hooked and on the edge of your seat wanting to know more. I found it highly enjoyable and it was interesting to get an insight into the beginning of what we know as criminal profiling.
Definitely put this on your list if you’re looking for a new series to binge watch, you won’t regret it.

I’ve watched three of those and I’m undecided on if I’ll watch Sophie: A Murder in West Cork or not, I didn’t like the The Sons of Sam: A Decent into Darkness because it was basically just one person’s unsubstantiated wild conspiracy claims with the original conspiracy person likely creating it just so they could make money and get their 5 minutes of fame

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork is definitely worth a watch. If nothing else it was insightful and a case I hadn’t actually heard of before so it was interesting to hear about it and have it on my radar. Very much intertwined with conspiracy and paranoia of a whole town and more.
I personally quite liked Sons of Sam, it was an angle I’ve never heard of before which was refreshing as everything I’ve watched prior seems to be a regurgitation of old information. I had no idea the amount of work that Terry put into researching. I do agree though that it feels like David sort of went with the theory to pass of some of the blame, I do think that he done all the crimes himself but having this new angle certainly prompted me to look into the theories further, I’m a sucker for information and conspiracies around the serial killer era.
All of these sound really good, I’ll have to check them out!
They are honestly so good!
Thank you for sharing, I’ll be watching The Deceived and Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. I’ll have to come back and give an update. Cheers.
Definitely do! It’s such a great TV mini series!

It’s very much worth the watch! Definitely give it a go when you can, so fascinating
I’m almost finished with Good Girls & I’ve been trying to figure out what to watch next so this post came at a great time! I’ve seen Night Walker & I liked that it focused more on the detectives & victims. I think I’ll watch Sophie next.

I loved behind her eyes! Such a different sort of series which is why I liked it and the twist at the end was amazing! Didn’t see it coming tbh
This list has made me realise I’ve neglected Netflix a little over the past few months. I love things like 24 Hours in Police Custody, so the one about hunting serial killers seems right up my street!
If you’re looking for a crime show to get into, mindhunter is it, can’t recall it enough! So insightful and intriguing
Some great ones here! I’ve been looking at Nightstalker for a while, might give it a try x

Definitely give Sons of Sam a try, very intriguing
I mean a huge YES to this post! We have been watching through all mystery and crime we could find on Netflix, so we totally needed some new titles. I loved Mindhunter and devoured it in less than a week, waiting for the next season as it was so interesting! Will check out the one about Sophie before it finishes! x
Thank you so much 😊 mindhunter is so good isn’t it? I’m so gutted that season 3 has been put on indefinite hold while David Fincher focuses on another big project
My boyfriend and I love watching true crime and mystery shows, but we’ve yet to watch any of these. We’ve been on the hunt for something new to watch for ages, and I think we may start with Mindhunter, sounds like a fab watch xx
Hannah

Thank you 😊 Night Stalker is so insightful, definitely worth a watch and The Deceived is just amazing! So gripping
OK, I think I’m going to watch these all.
The DocuSeries sound interesting, I think it’s so fascinating when they delve into the behind the scenes of mysteries and examine the police work.
Cora
They are so good! Honestly give them a go, they are very gripping!
I will have to check these out! I love true crime. I watched the Ted Bundy Tapes a couple summers ago and it was so fascinating, but so scary!
They are so good, definitely give them a watch. The Bundy tapes were so interesting weren’t they?
I really enjoyed Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer and Mindhunter, but I haven’t seen the others. Thanks for the recommendations – we’re back in a snap lockdown so I need some new TV! x
mia
I hope you enjoy the ones you haven’t seen if you get around to them, such great docuseries

xx
It really is! I thoroughly enjoyed it
I’ve been wanting to watch some thrilling movies for a while now. Thanks for these suggestions. I’ll definitely check it out!
Thank you, I hope you watch some and enjoy 😊
I love these types of shows. I have found some new ones to add to my list now too! Mindhunter is brilliant, isn’t it? I hope they make another series! If you love hearing about crime stories, there is a Youtuber called Bailey Sarian (I think that is how it is spelt) and she does her make-up whilst telling you about various crime stories….very binge-worthy!
Thanks for sharing these,
Aimsy xoxo
Crime is such a favourite of mine! Mindhunter really did tick all of the boxes. Yes! I’ve watched her before, I love how she combines make-up and crime
I haven’t watched any crime series in such a long time. I’ll definitely check some of them out. Thank you for sharing!
Antonia
You really should, the are great! 🙂
Gah, I can’t believe I’ve only seen Mindhunter (except the last season). I need to learn to watch more than cartoons and comedies on Netflix lol. These all look like great picks!
Lol normally I’m always watching horror on Netflix but trying to take advantage of all the great series they have surrounding crime, mystery and Thriller.
I love crime and mysteries too! And Mindhunter was definity a fave. Too bad there’s not going to be another season because I really enjoyed this series with Jonathan Groff.
Such good genres aren’t they?! Mindhunter was something else, so enjoyable for sure. Hopefully they do start season 3 in the next year or so, they said its on hold so I’ve got hope lol
Hello! What a great post. I love crime shows and these are all up my street. I’ve heard a lot of good things about mind hunter, I’ve now added this to my watch list. Thanks for sharing! Alicia
Thank you so much 😊 mindhunter is amazing! Definitely worth the watch
I’ve seen Sophie, too. I’m so sorry for her family who have never had the truth about her death.
Same, I heartbreaking for them!
I love murder mysteries. I just love how they piece together who the bad guy is! Absolutely loved a murder in West Cork. I was a little torn with the reporter who was accused and acquitted in the end, for me it wasn’t clear cut! Watch Who Killed Little Gregory on Netflix too. It’s fascinating and set in a little French village, and still unsolved.
They are great aren’t they? Always find them so interesting. Same, it was a lot of speculation and not much concrete evidence and it leaves you feeling unsatisfied. I feel for her family, it must tear them up
These all sound so interesting! I am a big fan of crime and mystery so I know I’ll enjoy these. I did start to watch mindhunter, and loved it, but somehow got distracted away from it. I need to go back to it!
You really should go back to it, it’s such a fantastic watch!
These series are new to me and seem like I have more to watch now haha. I like crime and mystery because it grabs people’s attention very good haha.
I hope you get to watch them and enjoy, I was gripped with all of them
I’m proud because i already watched couple of them and would see the others that you have recommended, thank you for sharing!
I hope you’ve managed to see the ones you hadn’t yet and enjoyed them 😊
