Birthday Memories That Shaped My Wishlist

Birthdays used to be magical for me.

From the end of July, I would count down the days until my birthday because it meant one thing, going on holiday!

Every year we went away for my gran and I’s birthdays as we’re just two days apart.

We’d fly out around the 9th and come home around the 23rd.

For two weeks, I didn’t have to worry about anything.

Mum was in a good mood, there was little arguing, and we made amazing memories.

The holidays were amazing, but the celebrations didn’t stop there. When we got home it all continued, a whole week of dinners, fun outings, and being spoiled rotten.

Why Birthdays Feel Different Now

As I got older, the excitement started to fade though.

The trips stopped, and my mum passed away the month before my 16th birthday.

So that year I lost a lot of the joy around celebrating if I’m honest.

Since then, birthdays have felt more like reminders that I’m getting older and it feels morbid.

I’ll admit, that thought still makes me panic a little.

But in recent years, I’ve tried to embrace the new age ahead.

Each birthday means a fresh year of opportunities and growth, or so I’m telling myself.

Why I Made My 28th Birthday Wishlist

Despite the shift in how I feel about birthdays, one thing has never changed, the question.

“What do you want?”

And my answer? “I don’t know.”
